GOOD DAY! WELCOME TO OUR GEN BIO 1 CLASS! WEEK 1, DAY 1-2 MOTIVATION Spot the Difference! What are the difference of the two? Spot the Difference! Direction: Analyze the picture and spot the difference between the two pictures. CELL TYPE: PLANT AND ANIMAL CELL WEEK 1, DAY 1-2 Learning Objectives a. describe the different types of eukaryotic cell, b. relate the concept of energy flow; and, c. create a Venn Diagram that shows the difference between plant cells and animal cells. PLANT CELL AND ANIMAL CELL Animal and plant cells are eukaryotic cells. There are many different types of animal and plant cells but all are variations of the primary cell type which can be considered as a typical and generalized cell. ANIMAL CELLS Animal Cells An animal cell is surrounded by a plasma membrane. The plasma membrane encloses the cytoplasm in which is suspended the membrane-bound nucleus and cell organelles. Animal Cells Animal cells lack of cell wall. Due to the lack of a cell wall, the shape and size of most animal cells are irregular. Animal Cells Animal cells contain organelles, most of which are membrane-bound. Membrane-bound organelles Organelles which are not membrane-bound Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Ribosomes, Centrioles Apparatus, Lysosomes, Mitochondria, Nucleus Animal Cells Animal cells some in various sizes. The size of most animal cells ranges between 1 to 100 micrometer and are visible only with the help of microscopes. Animal Cells Animal cells contain glycogen granules as food storage. Glycogen granules (glycosome) - an independent metabolic unit composed of a highly branched polysaccharide and various proteins involved in its metabolism PLANT CELLS Plant Cell Plant cells are similar to animal cells. Both are eukaryotic and have similar cell organelles. However, plant cell has cell structures which are not found in animal cells. What are the cell structures that we can only see in plants? Cell Wall – is found outside the plasma membrane. The main component of the cell is cellulose. The cell wall provides structural support and gives rigidity to the plant cells. Chloroplasts – are the most important plastids in plant cells. Their function is to carry out photosynthesis in order to produce food for the plant. Other Plastids – called leucoplasts function as storage sites of plant products. Large Vacuoles – are water-filled, membrane-bound organelles. The membrane of a vacuole is known as tonoplast. Mature plant cells often have a large central vacuole. Plant Cell Generally, plant cells are larger than animal cells and have a regular shape. Plant cells contain starch granules which serve as food storage. What are the difference between plant and animal cells? ANIMAL PLANT CELLS CELLS Has cellulose No cell wall cell wall ANIMAL PLANT CELLS CELLS Has a large No large central vacuole central vacuole containing cell but may have sap small vacuoles. ANIMAL PLANT CELLS CELLS Has No chloroplasts chloroplasts ANIMAL PLANT CELLS CELLS Many plant cells have a box-like or Various shapes rectangular shape ANIMAL PLANT CELLS CELLS Nucleus often located at the side Nucleus is of the cell due to centrally the large central located vacuole. ANIMAL PLANT CELLS CELLS No centrioles Has a pair of (except in lower centrioles plant species)
