Students should engage in meaningful discussions, critically analyzing how historical lessons can be applied today. Readi g Activity José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda (1861–1896) José Rizal-A Revolutionary Mind José Rizal was born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna, to a wealthy Filipino family. He was exceptionally bright and excelled in his studies, both in the Philippines and abroad. After earning degrees in Manila, he continued his education in Europe, studying in Spain, France, and Germany. His time abroad opened his eyes to new ideas about freedom, justice, and the role of education in shaping society. Rizal’s experiences with Spanish colonialism profoundly influenced his worldview. The Spanish rulers in the Philippines had oppressed the Filipino people for centuries, imposing heavy taxes, restricting basic rights, and using the Catholic Church to control the population. Rizal witnessed firsthand the injustices that his fellow Filipinos endured, and these experiences drove him to use his talents as a writer and thinker to advocate for reform. Jose Rizal and His Motivations for Writing Noli Me Tangere Jose Rizal’s first novel, Noli Me Tangere, which means "Touch Me Not” was written in 1887. It was his way of showing the world the abuses and corruption of the Spanish government and the Catholic Church in the Philippines. Through the story, Rizal exposed the cruelty and unfair treatment of the Filipino people. Through this novel, Rizal hoped to inspire Filipinos to stand up for their rights and demand reforms. Rizal wanted to wake up the Filipino people and make them realize how unfair the Spanish rulers were. He believed that by showing the truth, Filipinos would demand better treatment and more rights. He also hoped that the Spanish authorities would listen to the people and make changes peacefully. In the novel, the character Crisostomo Ibarra represents Rizal’s hope for peaceful reforms. Ibarra is a young man who wants to improve the lives of his fellow Filipinos by working for positive change. However, the novel also shows how difficult it is to achieve reform under the Spanish regime. The Turning Point When Noli Me Tangere was published, it sparked strong reactions. The novel was celebrated by Filipinos because it gave them hope for a better future, but it was feared by the Spanish authorities. They viewed Rizal as a threat because the book exposed their wrongdoings. After Noli Me Tangere, Rizal’s perspective became even more serious. He started to realize that peaceful reforms might not be enough to bring true justice to the Philippines. Several Factors that Pushed Rizal Toward His Stance Peaceful reforms weren’t happening fast enough. Spanish authorities continued to treat Filipinos brutally. Rizal began to see that the Spanish government didn’t really want to give Filipinos equal rights or freedom. These realizations shaped his next novel, El Filibusterismo, which showed a darker, more radical view of change, where revolution seemed like the only option. Relevance of Noli Me Tangere in Today’s Society Even today, Noli Me Tangere is relevant because it teaches us about the importance of standing up for what is right and fair. Many of the issues Rizal wrote about, like corruption, abuse of power, and inequality, still exist in some parts of the world. The novel reminds us of the power of education and peaceful protest in bringing about change. Rizal’s Hopes for the Future Although Noli Me Tangere didn’t directly call for violence, Rizal believed that the Filipino people could achieve change through peaceful means, especially through education. He saw education as the most powerful tool for awakening the minds of Filipinos and helping them understand their rights and the injustices they were facing. But Rizal also warned that if the Spanish government ignored the people's cries for justice, more extreme measures might become necessary. His writings helped prepare Filipinos for the revolution that would come after his death. For Rizal, education was not just about learning facts or gaining skills. It was about critical thinking, developing a sense of justice, and empowering individuals to demand change. He believed that an educated population would no longer accept oppression and inequality. Rizal's own life reflected this belief—he was a well-educated man who used his knowledge to fight for the freedom of his people. He encouraged Filipinos to educate themselves so they could fight ignorance and oppression. Why Education Was Important for Rizal’s Fight? Awareness, Empowerment, Non-violent Reform. Rizal believed that education would help Filipinos become aware of their rights and their situation under Spanish rule. With education, Filipinos would gain the confidence to demand change and challenge the status quo. Rizal saw education as a peaceful way to achieve reform. He believed that by educating the masses, Filipinos could demand their rights without resorting to violence. This belief in the power of education is one of the key messages of Noli Me Tangere and remains relevant today.
