# Developing the Whole Person ## Presented By: Mr. Marvin L. Dumpa ## Learning Objectives 1. Understand varied facets of human development. 2. Differentiate between each development. 3. Learn about the agencies of socialization. 4. Identify ways to enhance one's individuality according to the given aspects. ## Intelligence? * "The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination." * "I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing." ## Defining Intellectual Development * Means the growth of a child's ability to think and reason. * It's about how they organize their minds, ideas, and thoughts to make sense of the world they live in. ## Jean Piaget **Swiss Psychologist** **Four Major Stages of Cognitive Development:** 1. Sensory Motor 2. Pre-operational 3. Concrete Operational 4. Formal Operational ## Sensory Motor **Age:** Birth to 2 years old **Development:** * Infants discover relationships between actions. * They learn to grasp, push, crawl, stand, and tall. ## Pre-Operational **Age:** 2 - 7 years old **Development:** * Learn to use language. * Develop memory and imagination. * Think based on their intuition. * Lack of logic. ## Concrete Operational **Age:** 7 - 10 years old **Development:** * Starts thinking logically. * Egocentric is decreasing. * Awareness of external events is increasing. ## Formal Operational **Age:** 11 years old and up **Development:** * Think abstractly. * Formulate hypotheses. * Use deductive logic or reasoning. ## Important Cognitive Development Concepts * **Schema:** A cognitive framework or concept that helps individuals organize and interpret information. * **Assimilation:** The process of taking in new information to our already existing schemas. * **Accommodation:** The ability to change existing schemas considering new information. * **Equilibrium:** A state of cognitive balance when a person's experience is in line with their understanding of the world. ## Picture describing an example of Assimilation The picture shows a dog and a goat and an apple and mangoes. The goal of this exercise is to understand that the dog and goat are both animals. The apple and mangoes are both fruits, thus demonstrating assimilation. The prompt asks "Which two are the most similar?" The user is being prompted to identify the shared characteristics of each category. ## Thank You The image shows two figures, one pointing to the laptop screen, the other sitting at the laptop. One figure has a speech bubble above their head with an image depicting emails, the other speech bubble has a blank message. The caption reads "Thank You". The exercise was likely related to a lesson about the concepts discussed above.
