Recognizing the Elements of a Short Story Learning Objective: At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to use a story map graphic organizer in recognizing the elements of a short story. What is a narrative? Using the word narrate, what kind of text is it? NARRATIVE A narrative is a type of literary text that tells a story presenting a series events whether true or fictitious. NARRATIVE There are two types of narrative: Fiction – these are not true to life stories or unrealistic Nonfiction - these are based on fact or realistic stories. FICTION Examples: - picture books - legends - cartoons - myths - mysteries - science fiction - adventures - historical fiction - fantasies - plays - fairy tales NONFICTION Examples: - biographies - autobiographies - diaries ELEMENTS OF NARRATIVE ✓ Theme ✓ Characters ✓ Setting ✓ Plot THEME It refers to the author’s message or idea about or human nature where he or she tries to convey through the story. Some common themes in literature are “love," "war," "revenge," "betrayal," "patriotism," "grace," "isolation," "motherhood," "forgiveness," CHARACTERS These are the people, animals, or things that play roles in the story. Example: Belle of Beauty and the Beast. SETTINGS This is where and when the events in the story happened. Example: On a cold night of December, I received the best present. That magical night happened in a beautiful garden of the Kingdom. SETTINGS This is when and where the events in the story happened. Example: On Christmas Day, I received the best present. That magical night happened in a beautiful garden of the Kingdom. PLOT It is a series of events in the story. - Beginning - Middle - Ending GROUP ACTIVITY Time allotment: 10 minutes Form a group with three to four members.
