Lesson 1 The Purpose of studying World Rhemlyn Joy R. Gonzales,LPT Instructor I What Is Literature? WHAT IS LITERATURE? Literature is a broad term used to refer to written works, such as books, magazines, short stories, plays, and poems. It is derived from the Latin word “literatura” which means “writing formed with letters”. Literature can provide insight into the human experience and can be used as a way to explore ideas, express emotions, and tell stories. WHAT IS LITERATURE? It has been a powerful tool for expressing and exploring our humanity. When discussing literature, one can talk about the author's style, the themes explored in the work, the characters and their motivations, and the historical context in which the work was written. It is the mirror of society which reflects norms, culture, tradition, experiences, etc. What Is the Importance Of Studying Literature? Why is it Important? WORLD LITERATURE World literature can be defined as works of literature that have been created, distributed, and circulated beyond their country of origin. Examples: The Odyssey, Things falls Apart, A Doll’s House, and The Recognition of Sakuntala. All of these works of literature were created in countries around the world and are included in teachings in the United States and other countries. PURPOSE OF STUDYING WORLD LITERATURE 1.Literature represents a language or a people, culture and tradition. 2.Literature introduces us to new worlds of experience. We learn about books and literature; we enjoy the comedies and the tragedies of poems, stories, and plays; and we may even grow and evolve through our literary journey with books. 3. Literature is important to us because it speaks to us, it is universal, and it affects us. PURPOSE OF STUDYING WORLD LITERATURE 4. It tends to create awareness of the facts worth knowing, and at times a realization that they are not facts about things but facts about life. 5. It answers such questions as: What are human beings like? What can be expected of them? Why do they behave as they do? What is their aim in life? Literature As A Mirror Of Society Literature As A Mirror Of Society 1. Literature reflects the society, its good values and its ill. 2. What we see in literature is an accurate image of what we see in real life. It is a social document. It reflects the various aspects of society. 3. It deals with the lives of men and women in society ,social reality is to a large extent the subject of literature. 4. Literature as an imitation of human action ,often presents a picture of what people say and do in the society. Literary Standards Of Literature Literary Standards Of Literature 01 Universality 04 Suggestiveness 02 Artistry 05 Spiritual Value 03 Intellectual Value 06 Permanence 07 Style Universality It appeals to everyone regardless of culture, race, sex, and time which are considered significant. It describes a piece of writing that appeals to the hearts and minds of almost any reader. The appeal is considered universal due to its ability to cross gender, racial and cultural barriers, regardless of the time it’s written. Artistry It has an aesthetic appeal to everyone and thus possesses a sense of beauty. Artistry describes literature that is aesthetically appealing and reveals or conveys hidden truth and beauty. This type of literature appeals to broad audiences and possesses a sense of beauty in the writing that could even feel poetic. Intellectual Value Intellectual value takes readers into a bit of a gray area as they may have different opinions about what qualifies as intellectual, but from an academic point of view, intellectual works are relevant to society and thought provoking. Literature with intellectual value promotes critical thinking that enhances both abstract and reason- based thought processes and makes readers focus on the fundamental truths of life and nature. Suggestiveness It unravels and conjures man’s emotional power to define symbolism, nuances, implied meanings, images and message, giving and evoking visions above and beyond the plane of ordinary life and experiences. A suggestive piece of literature relies on emotional power to convey nuances, symbolism, implied meanings, imagery and messages. The power of suggestion allows the work to inspire and provoke thoughts and understanding beyond Spiritual Value Literature with spiritual value lifts up the inner spirit and soul and has the power to motivate and inspire readers. It typically draws on the suggested lessons and moral codes of society that are depicted in various literary genres. Permanence It endures across time and draws out the time factor: a particular time, and TIMELINESS, occurring at TIMELESSNESS, remaining invariably throughout time. Permanence is determined by a written work’s ability to stand the test of time, which makes it impossible to determine at the moment of writing. Novels that continue to be read over and over again across decades, either for enjoyment or for fresh insights and ideas, meet this criteria. Style Style refers to the distinct way the author expresses his or her thoughts. Words can be used in unique, creative and entertaining ways that make the work memorable. Style is another element that is subject to interpretation by readers in terms of its appeal. Literary works have the power to transport us to worlds far beyond our own and to open our eyes to new perspectives. Questions? Clarificatio ns? Activity Essay No.1 1.
