LESSON OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to: Earth Science is the name for the group of sciences that deals with Earth and its neighbors in space. GEOLOGY OCEANOGRAPHY BRANCHES OF EARTH SCIENCE METEOROLOGY ASTRONOMY GEOLOGY LAYERS OF THE EARTH OCEANOGRAPHY METEOROLOGY ASTRONOMY Earth is well equipped as a planet and ideally placed in our solar system and galaxy to support life as we know it. The product of some 4.6 billion years of cosmic construction, our planet is flushed with life thanks to a fortuitous set of conditions. CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAKE LIFE ON EARTH POSSIBLE OUR LOCATION IS FAR FROM MANY HAZARDS OUR SUN IS A STABLE AND LONG- LASTING STAR WE’RE AT JUST THE RIGHT DISTANCE FROM THE SUN WE HAVE THE RIGHT STUFF TO HOST A DYNAMIC CORE WE HAVE A BIG MOON TO STABILIZE OUR AXIAL WOBBLE WE HAVE AN OZONE LAYER TO BLOCK HARMFUL RAYS The term “Earth system" refers to Earth´s interacting physical, chemical, and biological processes. The Earth system is powered by energy from to sources. One source of energy for Earth systems is the sun, which drives external processes that occur in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and at Earth’s surface. The sun’s energy drives weather, climate, ocean circulation, and erosion. Earth’s interior is the second source of energy for Earth system. Heat powers the internal processes that causes volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountains. The Earth system’s processes are interlinked. Our actions produce changes in all the other parts of the Earth system. The earth system is itself an integrated and a closed system or open system, but it can be subdivided into four main components, sub-systems or spheres: the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere.
