Balanced and Unbalanced Forces Prepared by: Mr. Jerald D. Dela Cruz, LPT Learning Competencies 1 Investigate the relationship between the amount of force applied and the mass of object to the amount of change in the object's motion. Demonstrate how an object responds to changes in motion. 2 Infer that when an object exerts a force on another object, an equal and opposite amount of force is exerted on it. 3 Demonstrate how an object responds to changes in motion. Learning Competencies 4 Relate the laws of motion to objects in uniform circular motion. 5 Infer that circular motion requires the application of constant force directed towards the center of the circle. WHAT IS How does force happen? Forces can cause objects at rest to move. A force is a push or pull causes an object to move, stop, or change direction. Can force always bring about change in the state of motion of an object? Forces are described in terms of these properties: Magnitude – refers to the size or strength of the force, commonly expressed in Newton (N). Direction of the force – points to where the object goes. Point of application – the location of where the force is applied. Line of action – straight line passing through the point of application and is parallel to the direction of force. A diagram that looks at all the forces acting on a single object. A FBD has all the forces labeled with their magnitude and direction as well as the motion of the object. Balanced and Unbalanced Forces There is another force that acts on it that is supplied by the string (tension force). What makes the pen and the book stay at rest? It stays at rest because of the upward push exerted on it by the table (normal force). Reaction force of the surface Balanced (15 N) Forces Equal magnitude but are Weight of the books (15 N) opposite in direction. Objects acted upon by balanced forces remain at rest or stay in motion at a constant speed Unbalanced Forces Box starts moving to the right Forces that cause a change in the motion of an object. Unbalanced forces are not equal and in Friction (100 N) Pushing force (200 N) opposite direction. Net or Resultant Force Sum of all forces acting on an object. *If the forces are moving in the same direction, add the forces. *If the forces are moving in opposite directions, subtract the forces. Mini Task #1: Balanced and Unbalanced Forces A. Balance of Forces B. Unbalance of Forces
