Media and Information Literacy (MIL) It is a “combination of knowledge, attitudes, skills, and practices required to access, analyze, evaluate, use, produce, and communicate information and knowledge in creative, legal and ethical ways that respect human rights” (Moscow Declaration on Media and Information Literacy, 2012). IMPACT OF MEDIA AND LITERACY IN EVERYDAY COMMUNICATION LESSON 1 OBJECTIVES Discuss the concept of media and information Give the importance of media and information in everyday communication. Creating their own media piece that communicates a specific message effectively and ethically. DEFINITION OF TERMS MEDIA All channels of communication, including everything from printed paper to digital data. What Is Media is the method in how something is Media? communicated. Examples include: books, movies, songs, paintings, video games, social media, photos, podcasts, and TV. It refers to any INFORMATION facts or details about a subject. (Meriam-webster, n.d.) It is the process by which a message or information is exchanged from a sender to a receiver or COMMUNICATION between two or more individuals to generate meaning (Pearson et al., 2017; Duck & McMahan, 2009) COMMUNICATION PROCESS COMMUNICATION PROCESS SENDER This is the person that is delivering a message to a ENCODING This stage involves putting your message into a format that you can send, and that the receiver will be able to easily understand or "decode." MESSAGE This refers to the information that the sender is relaying to the receiver. CHANNEL OF COMMUNICATION This is the transmission or method of delivering the message. DECODING This is the interpretation of the message. Decoding is performed by the receiver. RECEIVER The receiver is the person who is getting or receiving the message. FEEDBACK In some instances, the receiver might have feedback or a response for the sender.
