Physics is one of the most fundamental scientific disciplines, and its main goal is to understand how the universe behaves. QUANTITY UNITS ACCURACY AND PRECISION UNCERTAINTY How do we interpret uncertainty? Example: The length of a wooden beam was measured and it was reported to be 220±𝟓 𝒄𝒎. It means that the correct value lies between 215 and 225. The uncertainty ±𝟓 is a probability limit and not an absolute one. If we say that the measurement is accurate, we are stating the degree to which a measurement correspond to the real value. What does it mean if the uncertainty is large? How do we measure degree of accuracy? 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕 𝒅𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒚 = 𝒙𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆 Example: The length of a wooden beam was measured and it was reported to be 220±𝟓 𝒄𝒎. ±𝟓 𝒅𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒚 = 𝒙𝟏𝟎𝟎% = 2.27% 𝟐𝟐𝟎 It means that the length of the wooden beam is measured to be 220, at 2.27 degree of uncertainty. exercise: 1.1 The correct value of a measurement is between 150 cm and 170 cm. Find the percent uncertainty of the measurement. 1.2. How are you going to write the value of the measurement?
