Summary
This document provides an overview of body fluid compartments, specifically detailing the distribution of intracellular (ICF) and extracellular fluid (ECF). It covers the composition of each compartment, highlighting the key ions and molecules present. The document outlines the sub-components of ECF, including intravascular and extravascular fluids.

Body fluid compartments Distribution of total body water (TBW): The TBW normally averages 40 liters in young adults which is distributed as follows: (1)- Intracellular fluid (ICF) (2)- Extracellular fluid (ECF) a) b) Intravascular fluid (plasma) Extravascular fluid Body fluid compartments (1)-Intracellular fluid (ICF): This constitutes about 2/3 of the TBW (about 40% of the body weight). It averages 25 liters. Body fluid compartments (1)-Intracellular fluid (ICF): Composition: The intracellular fluid contains: Cations: potassium (K+) as the chief cation & Small amount of Mg+2, Na+ & Ca+2. Anions: phosphates and protein as the main anions & Small amount of Cl&bicarbonate (HCO3-). Body fluid compartments (2)- Extracellular fluid (ECF): This constitutes about 1/3 of TBW (about 20% of the body weight). It averages 15 liters. Body fluid compartments (2)- Extracellular fluid (ECF):. Composition: The extracellular fluid contains: Cations: Sodium (Na+) as the chief cation & small amount of K+ , Ca++ & Mg++. Anions: chlorides (Cl-) as the main anion & smaller amount of bicarbonate, protein & phosphates. Body fluid compartments (2)- Extracellular fluid (ECF): It includes the following subdivisions: a) Intravascular fluid (plasma): -This constitutes about 5% of the body weight -It averages 3 liters. Body fluid compartments (2)- Extracellular fluid (ECF): b) Extravascular fluid: -This includes interstitial fluid (tissue fluid) and transcellular fluids (cerebrospinal & intraocular fluids, and fluids in joints, pleura, peritoneum, etc...). -It constitutes about 15 % of body weight. - It averages 12 liters.
