Mucor mycosis MUCORMYCOSIS ▪ Caused by fungi of the Rhizopus and Mucor species, which are ubiquitous saprophytic organisms, commonly infecting the immunocompromised host. ▪ These fungi have a predilection to invade blood vessels ,causing infarction and necrosis. ▪ Mucor mycosis carries a very high mortality 50%-80%. MUCORMYCOSIS Mucor species Rhizopus sp Sabouraud dextrose agar medium Potato dextrose agar medium Take place in *vegetative reproduction *Sexual reproduction *Asexual reproduction Pathophysiology ▪ Angioinvasion ▪ Vessel thrombosis ▪ Tissue necrosis MAJOR ROUTE OF INFECTION ▪ INHALTION. ▪ INGESTION. ▪ TRAUMATIC INOCULATION Five clinical forms of Mucor mycosis ▶ Rhino-cerebral ▶ Pulmonary ▶ Disseminated ▶ Cutaneous/Soft tissue ▶ Gastro Intestinal Rhino cerebral type has the highest frequency and mortality. →Opportunistic infection of sinuses , nasal passages , oral cavity. →Rapid death. →Grow rapidly and release airborne spores. →Enter through nose, oral mucosa and throat. →Attack immunelow peoples. Risk factors: →Diabetes Mellitus →Burns →Iron overload →Transplantation →Chemotheraphy →Intravenous drug use ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ Rare diseases occur in patients who have prolonged neutropaenia. Treatment with deferoxamine Indistinguishable from Invasive Pulmonary Aspegillosis. Symptoms: fever , Cough , dyspnea, Chest Pain, Pleural effusion. Species: Mucormycotina Routes: Inhalation ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ Life-threatning diseases. Specimen: Nasal Secretions. Drug: amphotericin B ( side effects) Treatment: antifungal theraphy. Deferoxamine injection is used to remove excess iron from the body in anemia or thalassemia patients who have many blood transfusions. It is also used with other medicines to treat acute iron poisoning, especially in small children. ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ Transmission: Inhalation of spores. Common in children. Affects Immuno-comprised patients. Symptoms varies depend upon the part of the body. Common Symptoms: abdominal pain, Bowel Obstruction, Vomiting , Bloody diarrhea,Dyspepsia. Prognosis is very poor. ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ Rare, fatal complication disease. Multiorgans manifestations. Symptoms: mental status changes. Occur in person who are already sick from medical condition. Leads to coma. *Reddish and swollen skin, skin trauma, ulcer. *mainly painful patches of skin. * fungal enter through skin. *patients who are low Ig A and IgG antibodies. *skin theraphy , transplantation. *Very poor *Surgery can done depend upon area Antifungal medicine, usually amphotericin B, through a vein.
