Ohlone College Vector Graphics Monica Cappiello E-mail: [email protected] Course Overview  Introduce terminology.  Demonstration of scanning, input devices and digitizing images.  Demonstration of software tools Bitmap vs Vector  Bitmap: Bitmap images—technically called raster images—use a rectangular grid of picture elements (pixels) to represent images. Each pixel is assigned a specific location and color value. Bitmap vs Vector  Vector: Vector graphics (sometimes called vector shapes or vector objects) are made up of lines and curves defined by mathematical objects called vectors, which describe an image according to its geometric characteristics. Bitmap vs Vector File Manipulation  Bitmap – any changes will have to be painted to make changes on image  Vector – image can be mathematically changed Bitmap vs Vector File Size  Bitmap – the more information the bitmap image has, the larger the file size  Vector – no matter what size, the file size will remain the same File Formats There are four basic file formats: .ai – Illustrator format  only for Adobe Illustrator .eps – encapsulated PostScript  accepted by all page layout, word-processing, and graphic applications .pdf – Portable Document Format  universal file format that preserves the fonts, images, and layout Units in Illustrator There are six units:  Points – A measurement system used by printers and Desktop Publishing applications. 1 point = 1/ 12 pica  Picas – A measurement system used by printers and Desktop Publishing applications. 1 pica = 1/6 inch  Inches – A unit of measurement used primarily in the United States. 12 inches = 1 foot  Millimeter - A unit of measure in the Metric system equal to 0.03937 inch  Centimeter - A metric unit of measurement for length; 1 cm = 0.4 inches  Pixel - In digital imaging, a pixel (or picture element) is the smallest item of information in an image Vector Art & Design  Samples of vector art and design Vector Art & Design Vector Art & Design Logos Branding T-Shirt Designs Icons and Emojis Games Transfer Easily from Multiple Devices Q&A
