It can be concluded that asking attention is an expression that you express when you want to be noticed. Whereas giving attention is an expression that is the answer if you are indeed paying attention. You might encounter this situation in class, in a discussion group, or in a conversation between two people. 1. How to express the desire to be noticed When requesting an interlocutor, there are formal expressions and non- formal expressions. If it's a formal expression, you would usually use it with older people, people you just met, or in official situations. This is different from the non-formal expressions that you usually say in your daily life. Whether it's when communicating with peers, people close to you, and so on. Examples of asking attention sentences for formal situations and also for non- formal situations! EXPRESSION MEANING May I have your attention? Bolehkah saya meminta perhatian Attention please! Anda? Please pay attention to me! Tolong perhatikan! Excuse me Tolong beri saya perhatian! Can I have your time for a while? Permisi Hello Bolehkah saya meminta waktumu I’m sorry if I bother you, but… sebentar? Could you pay attention to things Halo that I would say? Maaf jika saya mengganggu Anda, tapi… Bisakah kamu memerhatikan apa yang akan saya bicarakan? Hi Hai Look at me! Lihat aku! Hey, look up here! Hey, lihat ke atas sini! Look Lihat Listen Dengarkan Listen to me Dengarkan aku Please listen to what I want to say Tolong dengarkan apa yang akan aku katakan 2. How to Answer if You're Paying Attention Now that you know how to ask for attention, you should know how to answer. This will be known as giving attention, which you will often say in your daily life. When your interlocutor asks you to pay attention, what do you usually say? Usually, most people would say “Yes?”, “What happened?”, and so on. This depends on the context of the conversation between you and the other person. Sometimes it's formal, and sometimes it's informal. Here are some examples of giving attention sentences that you can express in both types of situations! Expression Meaning Yes, of course! Iya, tentu saja! You have all my attention. Kamu punya semua Definitely! perhatianku. You can speak! Tentu saja! Of course I’ll pay attention to Kamu boleh berbicara? you. Tentu saja aku akan memerhatikan kamu! Expression Meaning What happened? Apa yang terjadi? Yes, I’m listening. Iya, aku mendengarkanmu. I got it. Aku mengerti. Really? Benarkah? That’s cool. Keren! And then? What happened Lalu? Apa yang terjadi next? selanjutnya? That’s interesting. Itu menarik. What is it? Apa itu? Then? Lalu? Wow, that’s amazing! Wow, menakjubkan sekali! Example dialog 1) In class, a student wants to make sure his friends are paying attention to his presentation. Andi: "Excuse me, everyone. Can I have your attention, please?" Budi: "Sure, Andi. What's up?" Andi: "I want to start my presentation about renewable energy. Are you ready to listen?" Citra: "Yes, Andi. We're ready. Please go ahead." Andi: "Thank you. So, today I'll explain three main points about renewable energy." 2) A friend was telling a story in the cafeteria. Lisa: "Hey, guys! Listen to this. I have something exciting to tell you!" Rini: "What is it, Lisa? Tell us!" Dina: "Yes, we're listening. What happened?" Lisa: "I just won the storytelling competition in our school!" Rini: "Wow, that's amazing! Congratulations!"
