Name: ____________________________________________________ Score: _____________ Date Performed: ________________________ Activity 2: Tissues In the level of organization, we progress from the cellular level, we progress to tissue level. Tissues are collection of similar cells and the surrounding substances around them. Classification of tissue types is based on the structure of the cells, and the composition of the non-cellular substances surrounding cells, known as extracellular matrix (ECM). The four primary tissue types which include all tissues and from which all organs of the body are formed are: Epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue and nervous tissue. Epithelial and connective tissues are the most diverse in form, by structure, including cell shape, relationship of cells to one another, and the material making up the extracellular matrix. Histology is the microscopic study of tissues. Objectives: At the end of the activity, one should be able to: 1. Define epithelium and classify each type; 2. Describe general pattern or structure of connective tissue; 3. Distinguish 3 basic types of muscle tissue and its location; and 4. Identify primary components of a nerve tissue and its functions and its relationship on the role of nutrition. Materials: Reference Textbook Activity sheets Ball pen ruler Instruction: 1. Accomplish activity given in each task using reference textbooks in the library Task 1. Name the epithelial tissue based on shapes and layers 1 Task 2. Name the connective tissue based on shapes and layers Task 3. Fill-in the table. Type Physical Characteristics Dense fibrous (regular) Dense fibrous (irregular) Loose fibrous (areolar) Adipose Hyaline cartilage Fibrocartilage Elastic cartilage Compact bone Cancellous bone Task 4. Research the role of nutrition in the formation of the body tissues. Checked by: __________________________ Subject Instructor/Date
