Lab Midterm Study Guide Scientific Method: Be able to determine the dependent, independent and the control variables in an experiment. Be able to create a hypothesis from a set of observations Measurement: Know the units of measurement Be able to convert units including temperature (formula for temp conversions are provided) Macromolecules: Know the reagents used to test for Simple sugars, starch, protein and lipids. Be able to interpret results and provide conclusions. Know the structures of each biomolecule (carbohydrate, lipid, amino acid). Cell Structure: Know the 2 major factors that determine the strength of a microscope. Know the cell structures covered in this lab. (What cells have theses structures and what are their functions?). Diffusion/Osmosis: Know the definitions for diffusion and osmosis Know the factors that affect diffusion Know the definitions for hypertonic, hypotonic, isotonic Know the differences in plant and animal responses to different solutions Be able to interpret results and draw conclusions Enzymes: Know the characteristics/ properties of enzymes Know the factors that affect enzyme reaction rates Be able to explain a graph of enzyme activity Know the exercises performed in this lab and be able to interpret results and draw conclusions Photosynthesis: What is the name of the organelle that does photosynthesis? Understand the reaction of photosynthesis. Know where the Light and Dark (Calvin cycle) take place Know the exercises you performed and their results What is the function of a prism? What is paper chromatography (how does it work?) Respiration: What is the organelle responsible for respiration? Understand the respiration reaction Know the exercises you performed and their results What is the function of phenol red?
