Do you really want to achieve your dreams in life successfully? Now let’s find out what aspects in life that we need to consider in reaching our dreams successfully. In this module, you will be able to recognize and show the different scientific attitudes that a scientist must possess in order to be successful in carrying out scientific investigation. At the end of the module, you will be able to: identify the different scientific attitudes that a scientist must possess, relate the different scientific attitudes with famous quotations, and show scientific attitudes in a certain scenario. This module is designed especially for you young researchers. It serves as a guide and helps you learn effectively the different scientific attitudes which you can apply in your daily life especially in conducting an experiment or doing a scientific investigation. This module allows you to explore and utilize various learning opportunities at your own pace which makes you enjoy learning. Indeed, attitude matters a lot so, you have to extend your patience and determination in understanding and analyzing concepts as you go through in this module. What characteristics do you believe these individuals exhibit when working on their inventions/discoveries? The succeeding discussion will give you answers to these questions. Familiarizing ourselves with some foreign scientists 1. Albert Einstein developed the theory of relativity and the famous equation E = mc2, which is still in use today. 2. Isaac Newton developed the laws of motion and the universal law of gravitation, both of which are still in use today. 3. Galileo Galilei investigated the behavior of falling bodies and devised laws that govern the behavior of these objects as they fall. 4. Marie Curie was responsible for the discovery of the elements radium and polonium. 5. Melvin Calvin was the first to discover the chemical reactions that take place during photosynthesis. This time let’s have our very own Filipino scientists who have been recognized of their great contributions in the field of science. Getting to know our Filipino scientists 1. Arturo Alcaraz was instrumental in the country's geothermal energy discoveries. 2. Christopher Bernido established the basis for the unification of elementary particle's four fundamental interactions. 3. Henry Ramos is renowned for inventing the first plasma experimental equipment capable of producing gases that can be manipulated to generate energy. 4. Benjamin Almeda is often regarded as the Philippines' Thomas Edison. He is credited for inventing the automatic chiller and electric grinder. 5. Gregorio Zara invented an aircraft engine that runs on alcohol and has a propeller built entirely of indigenous materials. Additionally, he invented the video telephone. 6. Aluminada dela Rosa conducted a study on the energy generation potential of agricultural cellulose waste materials. Her research earned her the third place in the 1982 NSTADOST award for most outstanding research. 7. Linda Posadas conducted research on laser uses in communication, medical, military, architecture, space exploration, science, and entertainment. 8. Julian Banzon conducted study into alternative fuel production systems. 9. Anacleto del Rosario investigated the production of pure alcohol from tuba and nipa palms. He is often considered as the "Father of Philippine Science and Technology." 10. Amando Kapauan's research focuses on the environmental consequences of heavy metals. Do you want to be one of these scientists in the future? Do you know that the success of science has more to do with the attitudes common to scientists? 5 Scientific Attitudes set of attitudes that a scientist must possess to be successful in doing scientific investigation predisposition which will tend to foster scientific achievement As a result, it is strongly associated with the scientific process, in that attitude gives rise to the method, which in turn provides evidence of the attitude. What do you think are these traits? The following are some scientific attitudes; CURIOSITY always try to seek, inquire, and discover questions as to the causes of some events, which are not yet known keeps on reading to find information OPEN-MINDEDNESS considers suggestions and accepts criticism, shares ideas with others, considers several possibilities when investigating a problem. opens yourself to new ideas. Do not be one - sided. INTELLECTUAL HONESTY reports the data truthfully, gives comments as situations demand acknowledges the work done by others. 6 means questioning the validity and SKEPTICISM authenticity of something considered factual. doubts concerning basic principles does not accept things blindly without questioning develops the doubting attitude unless presented with reliable data judgment based on observable OBJECTIVITY phenomena and uninfluenced by emotions means gathering true observations and not hearsay. free from personal prejudices or biases.
