Arm & cubital fossa Dr Sapna , Asst Professor www.gmu.ac.ae COLLEGE OF MEDICINE Skin Superficial fascia Anterior compartment Deep fascia H Posterior compartment Medial intermuscular septum Lateral intermuscular septum Front of the arm- Flexor compartment •Coracobrachialis ✔ Origin: Apex of coracoid process. ✔ Insertion: mid-shaft of humerus on medial side. ✔ Nerve supply: Musculo cutaneous nerve [C5,C6,C7]. ✔ Action: Flexion of the arm (shoulder). •Biceps brachii ✔ Origin: 2 heads ✔ Long head(lateral head) : supra- glenoid tubercle of scapula. ✔ Short head(medial head) :apex of coracoid process. ✔ Insertion: Radial tuberosity & ✔ Bicipital aponeurosis in the skin. ✔ Nerve supply:Musculo - cutaneous nerve [C5,C6,C7]. ✔ Action:Flexion of the arm (at shoulder joint). ✔ Flexion of the forearm ( at the elbow). ✔ Supination of the flexed forearm. Front of the arm- Flexor compartment •Brachialis ✔ Origin: Lower part of the anterior surface of humerus ✔ Insertion: Ulnar tuberosity ✔ Nerve supply: Musculo cutaneous nerve [C5,C6,C7]. ✔ Action: Flexion of the forearm (at the elbow joint). Back of the arm- Extensor compartment •Triceps brachii ✔ Origin: 3 heads ✔ Long head: Infra - glenoid tubercle of scapula. ✔ Medial head: Posterior surface of humerus , below the radial groove. ✔ Lateral head: Posterior surface of humerus, above the radial groove. ✔ Insertion: Superior surface of the olecranon of the ulna. ✔ Nerve supply: Radial nerve ✔ Action: extension of forearm(at elbow joint) Brachial Artery: ✔ It’s a continuation of axillary artery at the lower border of teres major muscle ✔ Main arterial supply to arm ✔ It terminates at the neck of the radius by dividing into radial & ulnar arteries Branches : ✔ Profunda brachii ✔ Superior ulnar collateral ✔ Inferior ulnar collateral ✔ Radial ✔ Ulnar Cubital fossa • Is a triangular depression which is located anterior to the elbow joint. • Boundaries of cubital fossa: • Laterally : the brachioradialis muscle. • Medially : the pronator teres muscle. • Base : Imaginary horizontal line between medial and lateral condyle Roof : •Skin. •Superficial fascia. •Median cubital vein. •The bicipital aponeurosis •Floor: formed by the brachialis & supinator muscles. •Contents •Radial nerve laterally. •Biceps tendon. •Brachial artery with its terminal •branches (radial & ulnar arteries). •Median nerve medially. Applied aspects •Venipuncture: Median cubital vein is vein of selection for gathering blood samples and intravenous injections •Brachial pulse & Blood pressure : easily felt medial to the biceps tendon for recording blood pressure References • Netter’s Clinical Anatomy,4th Edition-2019,John T Hanson, Chapter 7,Page 367-435,ISBN 978-0-323-53188-7 • https://www-clinicalkey-com.gmulibrary.com/#!/content/book/3-s2. 0-B978032353188700007X?scrollTo=%23hl0001830 DISCLAMER The contents of this presentation, can be used only for the purpose of a Lecture, Scientific meeting or Research presentation at Gulf Medical University, Ajman. www.gmu.ac.ae
