ROWING KHS 132 Melissa Adelman, Declan Bennett, Matthew Brough, Jenna Weldon What is Rowing? ● Moving a boat using oars which are attached to the vessel ● Rowers sit with their backs facing the finish line ● Rowers will race against each other in teams of two, four, or eight or compete alone coxswain [ kok-suhn ]noun 1. 2. a person who steers a racing shell. a person who is in charge of a ship's boat and its crew, under an officer, and who steers it. ● Eight person crews have a coxswain History ● Rowing was first used as a means of transport in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome ● Began in England in the 17th and early 18th centuries ● First knownn race was the Oxford-Cambridge University boat race in the United Kingdom, in 1828 ● Women made their debut at Montreal 1976 Games, while the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games marked beginning of the lightweight events ● Rowing has been staged at every edition of the Olympic Games, except in 1896 in Athens ○ a stormy sea made the organisers cancel the event Types of Rowing Races 1 2 Sculling ● Use of two oars (one in each hand) Sweep ● Use of one oar (using both hands) Sculling Technique https://youtu.be/OpZbV8LyT _c?si=L9dnLeBQKqqmsaP8 Racing Distances ● Most common race is 2000m ● Races can range from sprints (100-500m) to long-distance (4000-6000m) 1 2 3 Single - One male One female Double - 4 Two male Two female Mixed Double - Racing Classes One male & one female Coxed Quadruple - 5 Four male & one coxswain Four female & one coxswain Coxed Eight - Eight male & one coxswain Eight female & one coxswain Rules & Regulations ● Boats are to be weighed before races and meet a weight requirement ● If the weight exceeds or does not reach the minimum requirement, a penalty is assigned ● Penalty will effect the boat’s placing at the end of the race Rules & Regulations ● Goal is to move across the finish line first in the least amount of time ● Each team is assigned their own lane ● Teams are allowed to change lanes if they choose Rules & Regulations ● For the start of the race, officials will fire a gun ● Boats cannot leave the starting line until the gun goes off ● Boats are allowed one false start ● If they false start twice, they are disqualified (similar to track) Required Equipment: 1. Boat/ Shell COASTAL BOAT *more stable and durable, used in coastal competitions 2. Oar(s) 3. People 4. Life jacket/ PFD 5. Riggers 6. Bow Balls 7. Seat/ seat pads Alternative Option Indoor Rowing ● Way to train technique and strength by going through the same motions as rowing outdoors ● Useful when there are no rowable bodies of water nearby, or if weather conditions don't permit rowing outside Safety Considerations (Row Safe USA) 1.
