Imperialism Motivations 3 main motivations God, Glory, Gold OM SLIDESMANIA.C OLD Imperialism Old Imperialism (during the time of Mercantilism) had three goals: GOLD Exploit the resources of the region to get gold GLORY Gain prestige and power by gaining territory GOD Send Christian missionaries to convert OM SLIDESMANIA.C NEW Imperialism New Imperialism (1816 to 1914) No longer about monarchs wanting money (Mercantilism), but about individual business owners pushing the government to acquire territory to help boost individual revenue Capitalism: An economic system in which private individuals or businesses (not the government) make decisions in the best interest of their own, individual, wealth and profits More of an economic emphasis rather than political conquest Business owners wanted territory, to gain access to OM SLIDESMANIA.C resources, to make more product, to get more money Goal: Control the means of production (the resources) to fuel the industrial economics - producing stuff so quickly they needed more resources Glory For King and Country Explorers sought fame and glory for discovering new routes for travel OM SLIDESMANIA.C Glory Maps on page 134 Look at the maps on page 134 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVX-PrBRtTY https://geology.com/world/world-map.shtml https://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/web-edit s/from-mercators-to-gall-peters-how-the-world-m ap-cartography-is-changing-for-the-good-4580641 OM SLIDESMANIA.C / God God relates to glory What were the two main religions in 17th-18th (1600s and 1700s) Europe? OM SLIDESMANIA.C God God relates to glory What were the two main religions in 17th-18th (1600s and 1700s) Europe? Catholics and Protestants OM SLIDESMANIA.C God God relates to glory More=better, each religion wanted to convert the most “savages” so that they had the most practitioners. Most missionaries had good intentions, just not always the best methods. Some Kings used religion as an excuse to OM SLIDESMANIA.C dominate Indigenous cultures Gold Money/resources Spain found gold from Central America France used the furs from North America Britain used lumber and tobacco from North America Fueled Industrialization and the Industrial Revolution OM SLIDESMANIA.C Mercantilism Glossary! Imperialism was largely driven by the economic idea of mercantilism Look up the word mercantilism in your textbook, what is this economic system? OM SLIDESMANIA.C Mercantilism It’s nice to be king A system of government sponsored international trade designed to make European monarchs rich. Mercantilism was accomplished through the use of monopolies What is the goal when playing the game monopoly? OM SLIDESMANIA.C Mercantilism Mercantilism=Mono poly In the game Monopoly, the goal is to own everything! When a merchant/trader was granted a monopoly, it meant that they were the only person with a monarch’s (king/queen) permission to buy and sell a certain resource in that country. OM SLIDESMANIA.C If granted a monopoly, the merchant would have to share some of the profit they made with the monarch who had given them the monopoly. Mercantilism So what happened If monarch’s had all the power, why did things change? Think about it… who else made money because of mercantilism? OM SLIDESMANIA.C Mercantilism So basically... Kings in Europe during the 1500s (16th century) sponsored colonies in other parts of the world. The purpose was to put money and resources into the pockets of the government and those who supported the government (ie. already had a bunch of money) OM SLIDESMANIA.C Method- plunder the colonies for their resources without asking (Fur in North America) SLIDESMANIA.C OM Thursday October 23 OM SLIDESMANIA.C i st a n d e x p l a i n th e t r h i a re l i e sm No t 1. SLIDESMANIA.C OM Although jobs, housing, and governance are important, there is an even greater need to provide the opportunity for individuals to deal with the effects of the dominance of the settler nations. We have suffered in so many ways. Our belief in the Creator, and the ways in which we manifested those beliefs, have been ridiculed and even made illegal in Canada.. OM SLIDESMANIA.C Analyze! The plight of the Atea community in Barangay Tongko on the slopes of the mystical Mount Banahaw in Tayabas town… is no different from stories of exploitation and government apathy. The people occupy a 10 hectare settlement…. But development seems to have gradually destroyed their place. OM SLIDESMANIA.C Analyze! More than 500 years ago, Europeans laid the foundation for a Newfoundland way of life based on fishing. However, fishing fleets from around the world continued to harvest the fish stocks of the North Atlantic. By the late 20th century, the fisheries had collapsed. OM SLIDESMANIA.C Analyze!
