**Islamic culture** During the Middle Ages, the Islamic world experienced a period of cultural splendour unmatched in Western Europe. There were two main reasons. Important trade routes gave Muslims access to the most important scientific and technological advances of the time. Arab culture valued, studied and preserved the science and philosophy from ancient history to a greater extent than in medieval Western Europe. As a result of all these factors, Muslims made great advances in many fields and helped spread knowledge globally
