Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is an extended term for information technology (IT) which stresses the role of unified communications and the integration of telecommunications. Definition 1. ICT is an umbrella term that includes any communication device or application, encompassing radio, television, cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems and so on, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as videoconferencing and distance learning 9 Examples of Information Communication Technology 1. Computers 2. Television 3. Telephones and other telecommunications products 4. Web-based applications 5. Multimedia products 6. Video equipment 7. Photocopiers 8. Fax machine 9. Email 10 Difference between IT and ICT 1. IT refers to an entire industry that uses computers, networking, software and other equipment to manage information, While ICT can be seen as an integration of IT with media broadcasting technologies, audio/ video processing and transmission and telephony. 1. In simplest term, ICT can be seen as the integration of information technology with communication technology. 11 Why Study ICT? 1. ICT helps to open the doors to a rewarding profession that emphasizes multiple skill sets. 2. ICT professionals support the emerging goals and cultures of the people and organizations they serve. 3. The demand for ICT skills is growing. 4. IT jobs generally pay well. 5. IT provides leadership challenges and opportunities that contribute to a satisfying career. 12 ICT Applications 1. Industry 13 ICT Applications ⬢ Other sectors, ⬡ Agriculture ⬡ Healthcare ⬡ Architecture ⬡ Home ⬡ Arts ⬡ Law enforcement ⬡ Career ⬡ Transportation ⬡ Government ⬡ Travel 14 Education ⬢ Students use computers, ⬡ As a reference tool: They use computers to browse the internet to look for information ⬡ To prepare assignments, projects, reports etc. ⬡ Blogs and social networks: It gives students the possibility of creating work groups ⬡ Planning through tools: calendars and task managers are very useful to schedule exams, deliveries, create workflows, etc. 15 Education ⬢ Students use computers, ⬡ Data storage in the cloud: ⬡ It allows them the possibility of working collaboratively, accessing from any device and from any place. ⬡ Digital whiteboards and interactive tables: ⬡ Whiteboards allow projecting and controlling images from a computer. 16 Education ⬢ Their interest in learning grows: ⬡ The use of resources as varied as videos, websites, graphics, and games make traditional subjects more interesting. ⬢ Interactivity: ⬡ The use of ICT in the classroom promotes the student’s active and participatory attitude ⬢ Collaboration between students: ⬡ Collaboration between students is clearly enhanced thanks to various digital tools. 17 Education ⬢ They enhance creativity: ⬡ ICT tools stimulate the development of the imagination, as well as the initiative of all class members. ⬢ Increased communication: ⬡ Close communication between students and teachers is encouraged through various channels, in a more spontaneous and less formal way. ⬢ Personalization and content up-to-date: ⬡ Digital environments allow real-time updating of all information and resources. 18 Education ⬢ Teachers use computers for, ⬡ Teaching ⬡ Making collaborative documents ⬡ Preparing teaching materials ⬡ Organizing tasks ⬡ Creating online presentations ⬡ Concept mapping ⬡ Participating in online forums ⬡ Evaluations ⬡ Internet, e module, Group Discussions Teleconferencing (Audio, Video, Web) ⬡ Providing activities that encourage student participation 19 Education ⬢ Scientist use computers in research ⬡ Searching available sources of information. ⬡ Store raw data in multiple formats. ⬡ Computers has powerful calculators. Statistical programs, modeling programs and spatial mapping tools are all possible because of computers. ⬡ Communication between experts to identify new areas requiring research and debating results. ⬡ Researchers can take computers anywhere, making it easier to conduct field research and collect data. New areas of research in remote areas or at a community level are opened up by the mobility of computers. Social media sites have become a new medium for interaction and information. 20 Education ⬢ School administrators use computers, ⬡ for administrative purpose to make sure that the entire operation runs smoothly. ⬢ “Information Technology is used in educational institutions all around the world to help teach the future workforce.” 21 Education ❑ Teachers use computers for Teaching Preparing teaching materials Participating in online forums and online conferences. ❑Students use computers as a reference tool. Eg: They use computers to browse the internet to look for information To prepare assignments, projects, reports etc. Researchers use computers to collect and process data. ❑ School administrators use computers for administrative purpose to make sure that the entire operation runs smoothly. 22 Education ⬢ E Learning - It is a learning program that makes use of an information network; ⬡ internet ⬡ intranet (LAN) ⬡ extranet (WAN) ⬢ Blended Learning - It refers to learning models that combines the face-to-face classroom ⬡ practice with e-learning solutions. ⬢ Learner- centered learning environment: - It means students personal engagement to the learning task using the computer and or the internet connection. ⬢ The future workforce is trained at educational institutions around the world. 23
