Introduction to clinical skills equipment [Foundations of clinical practice] Miss H Rogers Aim To gain on overview of how to use the Phantom Heads in the clinical skills labs Learning Outcomes By the end of this lecture you should be able to: 1. Demonstrate how to prepare for a clinical skills session in the skills lab 2. Demonstrate how to set up the phantom head unit ready for dry and wet work 3. Demonstrate how to set down the phantom head unit at the end of the session 2 Mortimer Market Education Centre Housekeeping Sign in and out using the tablet when entering the Education Centre Clinical dress must be worn, and bags/coats should be stored in your locker (not in the skills lab) No food or drink is to be consumed in the skills lab, however you may bring in your water bottle Make sure your phantom head and equipment is set up and ready for the start of your clinical session: AM session PM session 9.30 1.30 Please follow current UCLH/EDHEC guidelines regarding Personal Protective Equipment required Clinical Skills Labs There are 2 clinical skills labs in the Education Centre: Skills lab 1- 10 phantom heads Skills lab 2- 6 phantom heads and 2 Simodonts (Moogs) These labs are joined by a central preparation room which is not to be entered Some of your training may also be undertaken in the: Simulation suite (containing 4 dental bays) Seminar room Skills Lab 1 Most of your hands on sessions will currently take place in Skills Lab 1 where all 10 phantom heads are the same model (ADEC). The prep room between the 2 labs Equipment All the equipment that you will need for your clinical skills sessions will be made available to you in the skills labs by the Simulation Technicians This equipment includes: Jaw models Instrument trays Hand pieces Dental materials Supplementary items Alpron solution You should not need to access the prep room for any of the equipment. Please ask your supervising tutor if you are Phantom Head Units When the unit is switched off you can roll the unit out from under the work bench The power switch is located on the front of the unit to the right hand side After switching the unit on the unit will stabilise and will not be able to roll/move The control panel will light up blue when the unit is turned on Adjusting the Phantom Head Please watch the following videos which demonstrate how to adjust the positioning of the phantom head: 1. Adjusting the Phantom Head 2. Adjusting Head Movement 3. Adjusting the Setup Setting Up the Phantom Heads The phantom heads you will be using are ADEC. These information sheets (SOP) are available around the clinical skills lab for you to refer to if needed. On the other side of the sheet are instructions for the KAVO heads. These are different and there are 4 of them in skills lab 2. Make sure you refer to the correct SOP. Dry Work Setup Dry work means that no water is being used from the 3-in-1, hand pieces or power driven scaler (PDS) during your session in the clinical skills lab. Please watch the video titled Dry Work Setup which demonstrates how to set up the phantom head for these sessions (as outlined in the SOP). A point to remember: When detaching the metal pipes from the grey tubes, please try to avoid losing the tubing within the body of the phantom head. If this happens, speak with the technician who will be able to assist Wet Work Setup Wet work is when water is being used from the 3-in-1, hand pieces or PDS during your session in the clinical skills lab. Please watch the video titled Wet Work Setup which demonstrates how to set up the phantom head for these sessions (as outlined in the SOP). Note: There should be Alpron solution ready to use in the blue bottles, however there may be times when you have to make up more as demonstrated in the video. Setting down at end of session Please watch the video Setting Down the Unit which demonstrates how to set down the phantom head units at the end of the session. These steps should be followed for both Dry and Wet Work even though it is written slightly differently for both on the SOP. Note: The dismantling and washing of the rubber face only needs to be carried out at the end of the day or after their last use of the day Please remember: When removing the couplings from the unit waterlines, make sure to hold the metal connector and unscrew the coupling. Do not pull/twist the unit waterline as this may cause damage. It is important that the clinical skills labs are left clean and tidy at the end of the session ready for the next group: Make sure any used supplementary items and PPE are disposed of in the appropriate bin Instruments are placed back into their trays Any equipment that needs returning to the prep room is left neatly for the Simulation Technicians At the end of the last session of the day also make sure: Handpieces and couplings are placed back into their metal tins There is no debris left in the sinks from washing the rubber faces Phantom head units are switched off and rolled back under the bench How to report a problem If you are having any difficulties with the phantom head units, please speak to one of the Simulation Technicians at Mortimer Market, Luke James [email protected] or the supervising tutor for the session.
