# Introduction Learning plays a key role in the development of human society. Learning theories and pedagogical approaches from the past can inform teaching and learning today. However, as society becomes more technologically advanced, as science uncovers more about the human brain, and as educational institutions become more open to persons historically excluded from educational environments there is a need to understand and apply contemporary theories of learning to meet these changes. # Course Goals This course seeks to summarize contemporary theories of learning and pedagogical approaches for all students to achieve success. Summarizing these theories will help educators see the unique approach each theory offers and understand how multiple learning theories and pedagogies can be applied to their learning environment to support student success. # Understanding 'Theory' The word "theory" has two central meanings. It can refer to a hypothesis or set of hypotheses that have been verified by observation or experiment, as in the case of the theory of gravitation. It can also be a general synonym for systematic thinking or a set of coherent thoughts. # Exploring Educational Theories In the following sections we shall explore some of the educational theories that lead or have led to programs of reform. Although these theories tend to flow from formal philosophies, they take on a special character because they are conditioned largely by experiences unique to education. # Inclusive Learning Environments Finally, when learning is inclusive and internationalized all students feel welcome and supported in the learning environment, allowing more students to find success in learning. It is important to keep in mind that we do not have to rely on just one learning theory to support learning. # Applying Theories All of these theories and pedagogical approaches can help those who are invested in education find a way to reach all students in new and exciting ways to bring a spark back into learning, whether face-to-face or hybrid. Applying contemporary theories of Learning & Pedagogical Approaches how these learning theories and pedagogical approaches can be applied in teaching. Suppose neuropedagogy is an instructional designer's favorite pedagogy; it does not mean that she cannot use behavioristic approaches such as quizzing and rewards in her course design and teaching. Take the online first year Chinese course at Oregon State University for example: Students read the textbook, watch videos and listen to audio files from the textbook. Students form study buddy pairs to practice and record their conversations and upload them online as assignment submissions. Students also practice word recognition and pronunciation using online animated flashcards of key vocabulary. Students meet with their instructor online synchronously for oral examinations and take written exams online. Engaging pedagogy is the key design feature for this course. Although repeated practice and multiple attempts for submissions of assignments is rooted in
