PSYC 5123 Educational Psychology 2023-2024 Term 2 Lecture 11 March 28 Psychology and Professional Learning of Teachers and Other Educational Professional Topics The impact of self and identity psychology, teachers' values, and societal influences on professional identity development. Understanding pedagogy, andragogy, and heutagogy as distinct approaches to professional learning. The significance of contextual learning and the application of knowledge, skills, and competence in working with young people. The role of critical reflection in facilitating professional learning and growth. The Psychology of Self and Identity ‘Self’ remains a difficult concept to understand (Klein, 2012). The concept of ‘self’ or ‘identity’ is shaped by ‘I-Me Dialect’’ (Mead, 1962). Our innate characteristics (the ‘I’), coupled with the contexts in which we find ourselves and the people we are with (the ‘me’). The Psychology of Self and Identity ‘I-Me Dialect’’ (Mead, 1962). ‘Self as I’: who we are has been determined by a range of factors over which we have had no control (e.g., gender at birth, genes, place of birth, race etc.) ‘Self as Me’: who we are has been influenced by environmental factors (e.g., if we are born to wealth or poverty, those we live with, the opportunities or disadvantages we experience etc.) Personal and Environmental Influences Understanding and interpreting the self significantly impact one's professional identity and self-perception over time. The type of professional a person becomes, how they feel about themselves at any given point in time and ultimately, the sense of professional identity they acquire. Professional Development Professional development occurs through reflective practices within an ecological framework, where individuals are integral components. How question: now that we have made the decision to become educational professionals, how can we actualize this goal? Learning to Become An Educational Professional Pedagogy, andragogy, and heutagogy What Do Teachers Need to Learn? What Do Teachers Need to Learn? Knowledge of learners and learning How they learn and the social contexts in which they learn Knowledge of subject/curricular content and related skills Knowledge of teaching – including pedagogical knowledge, catering for diverse learners, understanding assessment and managing classrooms Personal and Environmental Influences Societal influences ‘entangled in the broader social world’ How is teachers’ professional work influenced by the social environment? Stakeholder Influences As a stakeholder (student, parent, principal/department leader, or community member), what expectations do you have for the quality and professional development of teachers?
