United Nations (UN) - Belize has been a member since 1981 and participates in various UN agencies and programs. Joined on September 25, 1981. 2. Organization of American States (OAS) - Belize is a member and engages in regional cooperation and democracy promotion. Became a member on June 25, 1981. 3. Caribbean Community (CARICOM) - As a member since 1974, Belize collaborates with Caribbean nations on economic integration and development. Joined on August 1, 1974. 4. Commonwealth of Nations - Belize is a member of this political association of mostly former territories of the British Empire. Belize became a member upon gaining independence on September 21, 1981. 5.
