Prehistory: -Divided into parts 1) Stone Age 2) Bronze Age 3)Iron Age 2,500,000-1,200 BCE B.C.E: Before the common era C.E: Common era - Used to have religious connotation but these alternatives offer neutrality in academic settings Stone Age - Paleolithic (old stone age) - Mesolithic (Middle stone age) - Neolithic (New stone age) - Agriculture - Fixed settlements - Civilizations Lascaux (located in France) Stonehenge Catal Hovik Nomadic man and hunter gatherer societies People lives in caves which resulted in Cave Paintings Why do they paint caves? What do they paint? - Important animal symbols - Human figures - Abstract signs/symbols -Utilized earth tones to create their cave paintings - Local materials (manganese, charcoal, iron oxides, clay, etc.) StoneHenge (2600-1400 BCE) Important terms: 1) Henge: circular form 2) Megaliths: Giant Stones 3) Menhir: Standing Stones Used to attract pilgrims looking to participate in rituals - Also renowned for its corelation to astronomy - Used parts of animals ro compose the construction of the stonehenge Structure and Construction: -Post and Lintel Used also in ancient rome construction Erecting stones took about 50 years Settlements: - One of the first settlements * Skara Brae * Floor plan Early example of urban design - Very narrow alleys - Early use of partitions and things like doorways/ alleys Interior: Composed of mostly stones - Prehistoric furniture, embedded furniture that can not be moved around (fixed) - Benches for sitting, Not much decor, Used whale bones as well (lots of animal pieces) Very peaceful, Not much weapons used Catal Huyuk - 7,000 people - Houses accessed through the roof using wooden ladders to descend - Residents are evenly spread creating a balanced floor plan Interior: 1) Had furnaces/ fire stove 2) Deceased relatives buried beneath the homes in burrow like excavations 3) Side ledges used for storage of goods 4) Mud brick or stones used with mud plastered over, and timber Modern Interpretations: From the Stone Age, we have color palettes and patterns derived and used in the design field today - Also see textiles and prints in the textile and fashion industries
