NORTHERN § Able to uphold their traditions as reflected in PHILIPPINES their music, dances, rituals, folklore, wood carving, agriculture and forestry practices. § For instance, they believe INDIGENOUS that many endemic trees PRACTICES such as Ficus Tree are associated with spirits IN (anito), so they conserved NORTHERN them (Lim et al. Citation2012). PHILIPPINES § The indigenous peoples also observe customary laws that lay the foundation for justice, unity and peace within their tribes. § Tongtong - A common practice in the INDIGENOUS Cordillera, the tongtong refers to a discussion-settlement between PRACTICES different parties, in the presence of arbiters and witnesses. Among the IN Kalanguya, aggrieved parties are given livestock, etc to use for NORTHERN guinnomon, a thanksgiving ritual to prevent the crime from happening PHILIPPINES § again. Kaihing - the early betrothal of children between two families who want to strengthen their good relationship or as instructed by the nangkaama to finally settle a dispute between two opposing families. INDIGENOUS PRACTICES IN NORTHERN PHILIPPINES § The Applai are said to have a rich material culture, as seen in their housing. In addition to the dormitory and granary structures, their four types of traditional houses include the two-storey innagamang. § Like the rest of the Cordilleran ethnic groups, the Applai made efficient use of their environment and built sloping terraces for their agricultural work. Their agriculture cycle begins with the planting of the rice variety topeng in June or July. INDIGENOUS PRACTICES IN NORTHERN PHILIPPINES § Like other ethnic groups, the Gaddang settled near streams and their cultivated fields. They traditionally planted rice and sweet potatoes for their own use, and supplemented their subsistence with cash crops like tobacco, and corn. § They traditionally chose their community leaders based on bravery, skills, knowledge of custom law, and a certain degree of earned wealth. They crafted and enacted peace pacts, which they call pudon. Both male and female could conduct important rituals for the community. And, similarly with the rest of the Cordillera ethnolinguistic groups, it is important that males be able to hold at least one prestige feast in their lifetime. INDIGENOUS PRACTICES IN NORTHERN PHILIPPINES § Like other Cordillera groups, the Iwak relies on agriculture as their primary source of subsistence. The Iwak residing in the Cordillera highlands grow taro and sweet potatoes, while those residing in lower elevations (like Nueva Vizcaya) plant rice. They also rear animals, especially pigs, which play an essential role in their indigenous rituals. § For example, an adult male must celebrate a padit, or personal prestige feast, at least once in his lifetime. This requires him to raise and gather enough pigs to use for traditional rituals. The meat will then be judicially shared with all members of the community.
