# Hyperlipidemia - **epithelial cells** - food in the small intestine - **interstitial space** - **capillaries/BF** - **Lymph system** ### Su... we eat: - **Prokin** - carbs (glucose) - **Lipids** - **triglyceride** - **cholesterol** - **hydrophobic** - water soluble - **phospholipids** - + prokin, now hydrophilic ### Superior vena cava - blood stream ### Dx: labs (what we want to see) - **total cholesterol** of 200- - **HDL** 40/50+ - **LDL** 100- - **Triglycerides** 150- ### Tx: yearly lipid levels - **diet** - decrease sat/trans fat - cholesterol - fiber (clean cut) ### HMG COA Reductase Inhibitors - **Statins** so: **atorvastatin** or **rosuvastatin** ### MOA: inhibit cholesterol production in liver - prokchon ### AE: - HA - fatigue, rash, itch - myalgias so: joint pain/muscle ache - **if worsen call doc** -> **rhabdomyolysis**: painful breakdown of muscle fibers - **preg x drug** ### Bile Acid Sequestrants - **cholestyramine + coleserelam** ### MOA: - prevent reabsorption of cholesterol (in diet, effective) - excrete from Gl ### Rouk: - powder in juice, TID ### AE: - poop! - GI so: constipation, nv, bloating, dyspepsia (indigestion) ### Phospholipids - build cell membranes ### Triglycerides - store fat ### Skriods - cholesterol - 80% made in liver - 20% in diet ### High levels cause atherosclerosis - narrows lumen - so ↑SVR, BP - ↑BF (PAD/CAD) ### Collects in arterial walls ### Fibric Acid - **Gemfibrozil** ### Tx: - ↑ triglycerides ### MOA: - activate lipoprotein - breakdown triglycerides ### AE: - so take w food ### Niacin - B3 vitamin ### Rouk: - 4-6 big pills/day ### AE: - hepatotoxicity, gout - ↑ DM (TBG)
