UNDERSTANDING THE SELF PHYSICAL SELF THE BIOLOGICAL BLUEPRINT BIOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT HEREDITY - defined as the transmission of traits from parents to offspring. The traits are made up of specific information embedded within one’s gene, the basic unit of heredity. GENOTYPE – refers to specific information embedded within one’s genes. PHENOTYPE – is the physical expression of a particular trait. It can be directly observed. WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL FEATURES OF A PERSON THAT YOU FIND ATTRACTIVE? CULTURAL BASIS OF BEAUTY Impact of Culture on Body Image & Self-Esteem Self image problem happens when your looks doesn't match your beauty standards. For example if you believed that attractive people are slim ones and if you were not slim (but not obese) then you might believe that you are unattractive even though others might believe that you are attractive. The problem here is with your own beauty standards and not with your looks. In order to like your looks in such a case you must fix your false beliefs about physical attractiveness. Body image is both internal (personal) and external (society) This includes: How we perceive our bodies visually How we feel about our physical appearance How we think and talk to ourselves about our bodies Our sense of how other people view our bodies Factors Influencing our Portrayal of our Physical Self Adults Media Peers Around Us FUNDAMENTAL INGREDIENTS OF SELF-CONCEPT SELF - IDEAL SELF - IMAGE SELF - ESTEEM refers to the bundles of pictures, is the self’s inner mirror that is the root of self-concept. feelings, and thoughts of the ideal regulates our external This is “how we feel about person that we would most like to performance. ourselves” be Building a Strong and Positive Self-Image De-emphasize numbers Realize that we cannot change our body type: thin, large, short or tall, we need to appreciate the uniqueness of what we have – and work with it Stop comparing yourself to others Spend time with people who have a healthy relationship with food, activity, and their bodies Question the degree to which self-esteem depends on our appearance Building a Strong and Positive Self-Image Broaden our perspective about health and beauty by reading about body image, cultural variances, or media influence Recognize that size prejudice is a form of discrimination similar to other forms of discrimination. Each of us will have a positive body image when we have a realistic perception of our bodies, when we enjoy, accept and celebrate how we are and let go of negative societal or media perpetuated conditioning. Physical activity can help individuals to achieve a positive self-concept and promote psychological well-being in adolescents through the improvement of physical perceptions and body satisfaction. (Bustos et.al, 2019) If you project a positive self- image, people will more likely see you as a positive and capable person UNDERSTANDING THE SELF Material Self The material self, according to William James, pertains to the objects, places, or even people which have the label “mine”. Material Self not the physical entities themselves, but it is our psychological ownership of them “we regard our possessions as part of our selves. What we have and what we possess.” Body innermost part of the material self Most people invest in beautifying themselves or even spending for cosmetic surgery just to make them feel better. Body is the innermost part of material self. You are directly attached to this commodity that you cannot live without. You strive hard to make sure that this body functions well and good. Example is Mariah Carey, she was reported to have placed a huge amount for the insurance of his vocal cords and legs. Clothes we choose the clothes we wear, directly or indirectly, these choices create a person's identity, and most likely communicate: Strengths, outlooks in life, emotional needs etc. The kind of clothes we wear affects our attitude and behaviors. Immediate Family father and mother, siblings, spouse and children are part of our self. we make effort for our family. Your parents and siblings hold another great important part of yourself. What they do or become affects you. When an immediate family member dies, part of you dies, too. When their lives are in success, you feel their victories as if you are holding the bacon. In their failures, you are put to chance or guilt. When they are in a disadvantaged situation, there is an urgent urge to help like a voluntary instinct to save one’s self from danger HOME we decorate our homes, use furniture that soothes our needs because these things are part of the public face we put as an extension of ourselves. Home is where your heart is. It is the earliest nest of your selfhood. Your experience inside the home were recorded and marked on particular parts and things in your home. There was an old cliché about rooms: “if only walls can speak”. The home thus is an extension of self, because in it, you can directly connect yourself. To identify whether a person, object or place is part of self, we should examine the following: our emotional how our behaviors are investment to these affected by these and the thing attention we put on them. Somehow material self is also a reflection of someone’s success or failure or a symbol of one’s social status. Thus, no matter how much or how little a person owns materially they will always strive hard to gain more. Materialism Consumerism when you give more the consumption of material importance to material goods and services in excess possessions than intangible of one’s basic needs. values. People thought that when you Materialistic people are those buy something he or she will who are obsessed with having be happier. The negative thing material possessions and this about consumerism is that it is considered as a encourages people to buy psychological disorder which is things that they do not really called as compulsive buying need. disorder or COD “I believe that a simple and unassuming manner of life is best for everyone, best both for the body and mind.” Albert Einstein
