DEONTOLOGY: PROS & CONS Pros It provides a clear and consistent framework for moral decision-making. This ensures that everyone is treated fairly and with respect. It places ethics entirely within our control. We can’t always predict the outcomes of our actions, but we are in complete control of our intentions in actions. It emphasises the intrinsic value of individuals. This prioritises human dignity and rights. DEONTOLOGY: PROS & CONS Cons It can be overly rigid or inflexible. Sticking to the rules without considering the potential consequences can lead to morally questionable outcomes. There could be conflicting moral duties amongst individuals. This makes it tricky to provide clear guidance in cases where individuals come from different cultures and societies which may have differing values. UTILITARIANISM PROS & CONS Pros Focusing on the greater good prioritises the well-being of the majority. This aims for a positive impact on society as a whole. It is impartial as it requires considering the interests of all individuals equally. This promotes fairness and justice. The focus on consequences allows for flexibility in complex real-world scenarios. By adapting to different situations and contexts this allows for practical decision- making. Provides a straightforward framework for ethical decision-making by focusing on maximizing happiness. UTILITARIANISM PROS & CONS Cons Happiness can’t really be measured. Determining and quantifying happiness is subjective and challenging. The pursuit of the greater good can sometimes justify actions that harm individuals or minorities. This brings the potential for disregarding individual rights. There could be unforeseen consequences. Predicting the outcome of actions is difficult, and unintended negative consequences can arise. It can’t be guaranteed that there will be a fair distribution of happiness. This is because it focuses on the whole rather than on the individual. VIRTUE ETHICS PROS & CONS Pros It focuses on character development by encouraging people to become better people through the cultivation of virtues, thus flourishing as a human. It considers the whole person by taking into account emotions, relationships, and social context. This leads to more holistic decision-making. It provides a long-term perspective which emphasises the importance of developing good habits for a fulfilling life. It is adaptable to different situations and offers flexibility in applying ethical principles to various contexts. VIRTUE ETHICS PROS & CONS Cons It is subjective because people differ and virtues can not be universalised. Which virtues are most important and how to cultivate them is influenced by cultural norms and values. It is difficult to apply in complex or ambiguous situations where virtues may conflict or compete amongst multiple people. There is a lack of clear guidance as it doesn't provide specific rules or principles for resolving ethical dilemmas. There is a potential for self-centeredness. There's a risk of focusing too much on personal character development at the expense of considering the impact on others. CARE ETHICS PROS & CONS Pros It emphasises human connection because it recognises the importance of human relationships and the moral obligations we have to those we care about. It promotes empathy, which is essential for understanding and responding to the needs of others. It focuses on vulnerability because it is particularly sensitive to the needs of vulnerable individuals, such as children, the elderly, and the sick. It avoids the abstract nature of traditional ethical approaches (like deontology and utilitarianism) that may be difficult to apply to specific situations. CARE ETHICS PROS & CONS Cons It can be subjective due to the emphasis on relationships and emotions. Different individuals may have different emotional responses to situations. It may prioritise personal relationships which leads to partiality or bias By prioritising the well-being of those one is close to and not the interests of strangers or those outside one's immediate circle of care. It can be difficult to apply care ethics to large-scale social and political issues, where it may be challenging to identify specific individuals or groups to care for. In some cases, it can neglect the importance of individual rights, particularly when these rights conflict with the needs of others. UBUNTU ETHICS PROS & CONS Pros It promotes compassion and empathy as it encourages individuals to consider the well- being of others and to act with kindness and understanding. Ubuntu can help to build strong and supportive communities. It fosters a sense of solidarity and cooperation by emphasising the interconnectedness of people. It encourages ethical behaviour that accounts for the broader consequences of actions on both human and non-human entities. It promotes social justice as it focuses on equality and human dignity to address social injustices and create a more equitable society. UBUNTU ETHICS PROS & CONS Cons It can be subjective, as specific interpretations of Ubuntu ethics can vary from person to person. This may make it difficult to apply consistently in certain situations. It may conflict with individual interests as following the principles of Ubuntu may require individuals to sacrifice their own desires or needs for the greater good. It can be challenging to implement in a diverse world as Ubuntu's emphasis on community and interconnectedness can be difficult to achieve in a world with diverse cultures, languages, and beliefs. In hierarchical societies, the emphasis on community and respect for authority could be exploited by those in power to maintain their dominance and suppress differing in opinions.
