ICT 7 Cycle: 2 Session: 1 Handout:1 First Quarter School Year: 2024-20245 Cave Paintings to Digital Art I. Learning Targets: At the end of the discussion, you are expected to: 1. Define art. 2. Trace the brief history of art. 3. Determine the different purposes, mediums and styles in painting. II. What You Need to Know? Art can generally be defined as the skillful expression of creativity and imagination. It can come in many forms, but it is usually visual in nature. Artists, philosophers, and other intellectuals have define art in their own words, and often their definitions do not agree with one another. The Russian-French artist Marc Chagall defines art as “the unceasing effort to compete with the beauty of flowers and never succeeding,” while the American painter Georgia O’Keefe describes it as filling a space in a beautiful way.” Norwegian artist Edvard Munch says that art “grows out of grief and joy, but mainly grief. It is born of people’s lives,” and the French novelist André Malraux calls it “a revolt, a protest against extinction.” Painting has been a basic expression of humankind. The hand prints left behind by our ancestors seen among the prehistoric rock shelter paintings are documented and preserved around the world. It is as if they wanted to tell their descendants, “We were here.” They also left behind pictures of animals similar to those depicted in the 3,000 year old Angono Petroglyphs in Rizal Province, the oldest known rock art in the Philippines. A petroglyph is a type of rock art created by carving images into a slab stone. The modern graffiti or informal wall and mural paintings seen in cities call back to those bygone times when artists used their hands like a reverse stencil to draw and paint. A stencil is a device used in design that has a particular shape cut out for printing. Prehistoric painters used minerals like hematite, iron and limonite as pigments. They traveled long distances to mine these minerals and get the right colors for their cave paintings. They also used charcoal, burnt bones, and ground calcite to create various shades of grey. To produce the paint, they mixed all of these materials with animal fat, vegetable juice or some other binding substance. Nowadays we can just buy paints, brushes, canvases and other art materials from a nearby bookstore and start painting right away. The artists essentially uses only two techniques in painting: transparent and opaque. III. Activity How would you define art in your own words? IV. Reference Gabriel David A. Medina, Jaime D.L. Caro, Ph.D, (2017) Digital Art in Photoshop, pages 3-7.
