HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Prof. Dr. Gülşen Vural HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING As in every area also in nursing for adaptation to chancing world, nurses should have same equipments and to use them. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING The health care system is constantly changing. With the burden and demands of disease and the challenge and pressure to do more with fewer resources, nurses are required to innovate and find new information and ways to improve health promotion, disease prevention, and ways of care. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING When we look at history of nursing we see that inovation is an important part of nursing. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Because nurses give care to patients who has diffirent condition. Nurses generally give care by chancing opportunity and resources. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Many of the healthcare advances made by nurses were developed during World War One. CONT… During World war I, nurses had to manage hundreds of clients with minimal resources and work quickly in dangerous and stressful situations. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Nurses learned the importance of quickly addressing head, chest, and abdominal wounds and developed the concept of treating certain wounds immediately. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING These nurses began to understand the variety of repercussions from head injuries. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING They developed antiseptic cleansing techniques for infections, and began to understand shell shock. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Nurses also learned how to develop empathy for wounded soldiers and while this skill was not lacking pre-World War One. This innovation allowed for empathy to become a critical part of the accepted nurse role. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING World War One pressed for the development of plastic surgery, physical therapy, and occupational therapy for the people who were disabled. THE CRASH CART The wheeled set of drawers stocked with equipment, originally called the crisis cart, was invented by registered nurse Anita Dorr in 1968, after years of watching precious time slip away as doctors and nurses procured the proper tools. CONT… Crash cart is now used all over the world. COLOR-CODED IV LINES IV lines were made of clear plastic until nurse Teri Barton-Salinas and her sister, Gail BartonHay, decided to patent their color-coded lines in 2003 to help reduce medical errors. CONT… Barton-Salinas got the idea when she was working as a labor delivery nurse and had to use the lines in newborns. CONT… During an emergency, a nurse has only seconds to identify the correct equipment, making easy identification key. NEONATAL PHOTOTHERAPY Many babies have high bilirubin levels, which occur when the body creates new red blood cells. In the 1950s, Sister Jean Ward discovered that sunlight helped to have good results in babies with high bilirubin level NEONATAL PHOTOTHERAPY She noticed that fresh air and warm sunlight helped the babies cared for as a nurse in the premature unit. CONT… When she brought one child inside one day, a doctor noticed one section of skin that had been covered by the corner of a blanket was yellower than the rest of the baby’s body. Now medical professionals use phototherapy to treat jaundiced babies. CONT… In the 1990s, Sharon Rogone, who had worked as a nurse in hospital neonatal intensive care units, created glasses especially designed for the teeny patients. CONT… She held them in place with a little bonnet and called the whole thing the Bili-Bonnet. BABY BOTTLES WITH DISPOSABLE LINERS Watching how nursing on bottles exhausted babies, Adda May Allen in the 1940s, created a disposable liner that moms and hospitals could throw away after just one use. CONT… While a baby sucked on a traditional bottle, a partial vacuum formed, inverting the nipple. OSTOMY BAG Elise Sorensen’s little sister, Thora, had colon cancer. After surgery, Thora faced life with an ostomy appliance for her waste, which often smelled bad and leaked with the equipment available. OSTOMY BAG Elise, a visiting Danish nurse, created a solution for her sister in 1954. A plastic pouch that she could adhere to her body. The invention has helped those who’ve had ostomy surgery live normal lives ever since. SANITARY PADS On the battlefield during war, doctors and nurses used a material called cellucotton to treat soldiers’ wounds. The product was five times as absorbent as cotton, which was in short supply. CONT… The field nurses also used it unofficially as a sanitary pad, and within a few years of the war’s end, the idea was popularized in the disposable commercial product, Kotex. COMPRESSION SOCKS Neomi Bennett, a community nurse in the UK, noticed that many of her patients avoided wearing compression socks. COMPRESSION SOCKS These socks help prevent the deadly blood clot condition deep vein thrombosis (DVT), but the patients found them too difficult to put on. NEO-SLIP Neomi designed a new product to help: Neoslip, a pouch that prevents friction and helps the socks slide on, in 2013. NEO-SLIP Her invention is now available at Boots pharmacies. It’s been used by tens of thousands of patients, and undoubtedly prevented DVT deaths. CONT… Nurses, Neomi says, nurses are in a unique position to innovate. Because nurses are on the front line, patients come to us with their problems. They approach us with things they wouldn’t approach anyone else about. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING In history innovations alone changed health care for the people. People also learned the skill of how to act fast and problem solve with good judgement and intelligence. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING As time progressed, the habits and procedures of nursing practice grew and developed. New innovations regarding treatments, specific care and healing procedures expanded and advanced alongside other medical fields. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Nurses, together with other members of the health team, continue to push and develop the boundaries of what is known and practiced in the healthcare environment. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Negative pressure wound therapy remove infectious materials, promote “perfusion and granulation tissue formation and to reduce edema through “controlled subatmospheric pressure”. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Another medical innovation for wound care was skin grafts to help with wound closure. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Technological breakthroughs have resulted in a better understanding of pathogenic factors and a strict adherence to standards of care, which means there is new hope for solving the problem of impaired healing. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Innovations in medication administration include automated dispensing, automatic medication packages, and the location of medication dispensing carts. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Before these advances, long steps in the medication use process was a source of potential error and that transcription of orders was another cause of error. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING With these innovations in medication administration, nurses are better able to care for their clients and deliver higher quality of care. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING To day nurses; transforms patient data, manages patient care, to do research in all areas. For that reason they have a responsibility to transform inovation in care of patients. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING With the increasing of elderly population and disease, there is a need for nursing care. This need will be meet only with an inovatif nursing care. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING The lack of trained manpower despite the increasing population results in technological facilities to be shifted in nursing area. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Countries focused on elderly care allocate a budget for inovation and curriculum of professional’s will be responsible for these groups care. TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS IN NURSING TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS IN NURSING The advances in information technology and new devices have improved the quality of life for patients and healthcare professionals alike. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING The technological advancements in nursing have changed the experience of care worldwide. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Electronics such as computers, phones and tablets help clients manage their symptoms and conditions through web-based interventions. BENEFIT OF TECHNOLOGY Electronic health records Decreased Human Error Positive Impact on Nursing Shortage ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS An electronic health record is a digital version of a patient’s medical history. It can include progress notes, providers, problems, medications, lab data, etc. ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS EHRs can improve patient care by improving the accuracy and clarity of medical records, and making data easily accessible to healthcare providers, doctors, and patients. TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS Telecommunication systems have made it easier for patients separated geographically to receive nursing care via remote patient monitoring, live video conferencing and mobile health apps. TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS In today’s environment, it has become easier for those in remote geographic areas to have access to quality care. DECREASED HUMAN ERROR DECREASED HUMAN ERROR New technologies can decrease the chance of human error. Nurses who work long hours or have understaffed units are at a higher risk of making mistakes. DECREASED HUMAN ERROR With new medical technologies, routine procedures are simplified. For example, automated IV pumps can measure the dosage of medication given to patients. This creates a quicker process for changing drip amounts and dosage. DECREASED HUMAN ERROR EHRs also help with decreasing mistakes at the bedside. Since the data is readily available, EHRs can help reduce duplication of tests or delays in treatment. POSITIVE IMPACT ON NURSING SHORTAGE POSITIVE IMPACT ON NURSING SHORTAGE Nurse burnout has been a factor in the shortage of nurses in the U.S. Prolonged mental and physical exhaustion can cause nurses to feel stretched thin, which leads to nurses leaving their practice setting. POSITIVE IMPACT ON NURSING SHORTAGE Emerging technologies in telehealth can help mitigate the burden put on nurses since it takes fewer nurses to provide adequate care. CONT… Telehealth also provides nurses the opportunity to reach geographical areas that are identified as having health professional shortages. CONT… This includes locations in more rural regions that lack reasonable numbers of healthcare professionals; telehealth helps address these shortages by effectively providing care to patients remotely. CONT… These strides in telehealth technology can ultimately reduce healthcare costs by decreasing ER visits and hospital admissions. TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING Once with technologic support only economic cost calculation was done, today online care services, online follow up and home care services are being carried out. TELEHEALTH AND NURSING The advancement of telephones and cameras have greatly improved quality of service in nursing and the level of comfort and support experienced by clients. TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS IN NURSING With using of tecnological services, individuals have a change to have cost effective services with paying less attention in their homes. TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS IN NURSING Especially by the spread of the internet, information has been shared quikly and provided nurses the opportunity to have knowledge in their professional areas. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING As a result nurses to see developments in their areas and other areas and transform this knowledge in their professional area. TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS IN NURSIN Teleheath applications are increasingly important for graduate and postgraduate education in the health professions, professional certification and recertification, continuing medical education, and health education for consumers and patients. TELEHEALTH NURSING Telehealth nursing is essentially what patients have come to know in the past as counseling over the phone. Telehealth nurses to reach patients, monitor their conditions and interact with them using computers, audio and visual accessories and telephones. TELEHEALTH NURSING Nurses who practice telehealth come from all settings and use technology like web cameras, VOIP, the Internet and telephone lines to deliver care over a long distance. Telehealth care is effective despite being remote. TELEHEALTH NURSING Telehealth nursing can be done anywhere. Nurses can make use of technology to conduct telehealth sessions in their homes, at doctor’s offices, in prisons, and in clinics and hospitals. TELEHEALTH NURSING In emergencies, nurses from around the world can participate in telephone triage set-ups. Wherever nursing is done in a telehealth setting, nurses can monitor a patient’s oxygen levels, heart rate, respiration, blood glucose and more. TELEHEALTH NURSING Patients contact their nurses through the telehealth system to get help. In non-emergency situations, they can get the nurse to take their blood pressure readings or glucose readings, for instance. CONT… Nurses can instruct patients as to how to dress a wound or treat a minor burn. HISTORY OF CREATIVITY IN NURSING In South Africa, nurses have used mobile phones to support individuals living with HIV/AIDS and to improve their client’s adherence to antiretroviral therapy.
