INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVITY AND NURSING LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of this class students expected to learn; Meaning of creativity, Creativity and nursing, Process of creative thinking, What is innovation, Charecteristics of creative person. CREATIVITY AND NURSING Creativity is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. CREATIVITY AND NURSING Creativity is the capacity or ability of an individual to create, discover or produce a new idea or object including the rearrangement or reshaping of what is already known. CREATIVITY AND NURSING Creativity is the ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, and to generate solutions. WHAT IS CREATIVE THINKING WHAT IS CREATIVE THINKING Creative thinking mean that, the prediction of an individual are new, original, ingenious and unusual. CONT… In 1903, Marie Curie and her husband won the Nobel Prize in physics for their work on radioactivity. She was the first woman ever to receive a Nobel Prize. CONT… Pierre and Marie worked on separate project, but after the birth of their first child, Pierre began to conduct research with Marie on x-rays and uranium. CONT… She defined radioactivity Marie and Pierre spent time working with pitchblende. WHAT IS CREATIVE THINKING Creative thinking expresses itself in a multitude of ways. For example; a nurse can find a device for patient care. A lawyer discovers an out of the box strategy to defend her client. CONT… Creative skills give an edge to all professionals. It drives innovation and progress in almost every field. PROCESS OF CREATIVITY Creativity has some process. These are; Problem Sensitivity Knowledge deficiecy Difficulty in an area to do something CONT… To seek solution Estimating To test experiment Re test experiments To make a production. PROBLEMS IN NURSING CARE Working directly with patients is a huge element of healthcare, and nurses provide a crucial element of interaction that allows patients to feel at ease. PROBLEMS IN NURSING CARE Working with families, explaining procedures, and helping to take a patient’s mind off of their sickness are all part of nursing jobs. WHAT IS PROBLEM A problem is a situation preventing something from being achieved. Someone who has a problem must find a way of solving it. The means of solving a problem is called a "solution”. SENSITIVITY Sensitivity is an ability to understand what other people need, and be helpful and kind to them. KNOWLEDGE DEFICIENCY Knowledge deficiency mean to need knowledge in a spesific area. For example need for diabetic foot ulcer forces nurses to think on find a solution. DIFFICULTY A difficulty is anything that give us a hard or difficult time. A challenge that arises that prevents us from achieving our goal is an example of a difficulty. SEEKING SOLUTION Solution-seekers see the solution, do not hammer out the problem. Solution-seeking is a deliberate way of thinking. ESTIMATING To find a value that is close enough to the right answer, usually with some thought or calculation involved. TEST EXPERIMENT An experiment is a test that involves manipulating some factors in a system in order to see how that affects the outcome. Ideally, experiments also involve controlling as many other factors as possible in order to isolate the cause of the experimental results. RETEST EXPERIMENT Retesting to ensure that the defects which were found and posted in the earlier build were fixed or not in the current build. TO MAKE A PRODUCT Medical device manufacturing includes all aspects of the fabrication of a medical device, from designing a manufacturing process to scale-up to ongoing process improvements. It also includes the sterilization and packaging of a device for shipment. HOW WE FIND PROBLEMS IN NURSING PROBLEMS IN NURSING As nurses, we tend to be critical thinkers and problem solvers, experts in assessment and prioritization within our practice. CONT… Despite these tendencies, nurses have been historically under-represented in the innovation space. INOVATION Innovation as the process by which new ideas are generated that advance, improve or even revolutionize our lives, work, and in the case of healthcare, how we care for patients. INOVATION According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “health innovation identifies new or improved health policies, systems, products and technologies, services and delivery methods that improve people’s health and wellbeing.” INOVATION AND CREATIVITY Inovation need creativity Creativity involves two processes: Thinking and then producing. WHAT IS THINKING? Thinking mean the process of considering or reasoning about something. Creative thinking stretches the mind in order to use its imagination. It is discovery stage. WHAT IS CREATIVE THINKING CREATIVE THINKING Individual with creative thinker must be knowledgeable in an area to see the possibilities and make connections, which is possible, but for a mind that thinks creatively, anything is possible. CONT... Example: for the solution of oil crisis people may use winds and may also use solar power. For the solution of pain we use heat therapy. CHARACTERISTICS OF CREATIVE PERSON Creative person has some skills; To be aware of problems To have ability of problem solving Introspective thinking (To be puzzled) Humor curiosity Risk taking and, Ability to concentrate. CONT... Creative people can stretch their mind to think in different ways or different ideas and always ask themselves questions like what the problem is? Personality with creativity can solve the problem effectively. BEING AWARE OF PROBLEMS BEING AWARE OF PROBLEMS For being aware of patient problems, nurses should sort out relevant and significant data. Nurses; Get to know patients, Create an inviting environment, Help patient stay comfortable. CONT… Educate patients and their families Follow-up with patients Spend time with patients and, To be positive. ABILITY PROBLEM SOLVING For problem solving; First nurses should define problem Think about the solutions Plan solution Carry out the plan and, Evaluate the results. ABILITY PROBLEM SOLVING Nurses expected to have or develop strong problem solving skills. CAPACITY TO BE PUZZLED To be puzzled over things is one trait of thinking creatively. Creative people can stretch their mind to think in different ways or different ideas and always ask themselves questions like what the problem is? CONT... Why the problem occurred? What the solutions could be? This nature helps to gain more information. Usually children have this personality. HUMOUR CURIOSITY ON CREATIVITY HUMOUR CURIOSITY Humor is defined as a person’s ability to appreciate the funny side of a situation. The importance of humor in nursing care was introduced four decades ago. HUMOUR CURIOSITY Coser was the first to posit that humor is related to disease and the stress of hospitalization for patients. The results from his study revealed that, humor is a means for managing threatening situations like hospitalization. HUMOUR CURIOSITY Henderson argued that, humour and laughter among patients and health workers can be as good as, or surpass treatment while, for Yura and Walsh, humour and with help broaden patients and nurses’ outlook on life. HUMOUR CURIOSITY Humour is an inseparable part of daily life, and at times it is regarded as a means of dealing with one’s problems Humour generally positive and universal experience for people from different cultural and social backgrounds around the world. HUMOUR CURIOSITY Humour can enhance health promotion among nurses and the quality of patient care; it is also considered a patient care strategy. RISK TAKING RISK TAKING Risk taking is any behavior with a perceived uncertainty about its possible benefits or costs for the physical, economic or psycho-social well-being of oneself or others. LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS IN RISK TAKING LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS Leadership behaviour is very important for risk taking. Promoting the best person for the job, not the person considered “right” by others. LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS Doing what is “right” in situations and not what is easy or expedient. Encouraging and embracing an innovation that looks promising when others won’t. LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS Putting the patient first above profits. Protecting those are “truth tellers” from retaliatory managers. Challenging poor decisions instead of simply accepting them. FEAR AND RISK TAKING FEAR AND RISK TAKING Fear plays a big role in why we are often unwilling to take risks. We are afraid of appearing too aggressive; we are afraid of looking like an outlier in the group. CONT… It is important to pace ourself as risk takers. Risk taking is a learned skill and all of us have the capacity to build it by exercising. ABILITY TO CONCENTRATE ABILITY TO CONCENTRATE Ability to concentrate in something specific even when doing many thing at a time and also find little time for introspection. STAGES OF CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING STAGES OF CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING Preparation stage Incubation stage Illumination insight stage Verification (evaluation) stage and, Revision stage. PREPARATION STAGE In this stage the creative thinker prepare for personal changes, person becomes freely explored with subjects by defining the problem and collects the facts and materials necessary for the solution. CONT... Preparatory work on a problem focuses the individual’s mind on the problems and explores the problem dimensions. CONT… Failing to solve the problem, the thinker turns away from it, either deliberately or involuntarily. CONT… Nurses must think critically to provide effective care while coping with the expansion in role associated with the complexities of current health‐care systems. INCUBATION STAGE Incubation stage is initiated when the creative thinker turns away from the problem and, letting the mind completely work it through. During this stage, the ideas that were interfering with the solution of the problem begin to fade. INCUBATION STAGE The unconscious thought processes involved in creative thinking are also at work during this stage. Like preparation stage this also lasts for minutes, weeks and even years. ILLUMINATION INSIGHT STAGE During illumination stage, ideas arise from the mind to provide the basis of a creative response. These ideas can be pieces of the whole or entity all at once. ILLUMINATION INSIGHT STAGE Creative thinker experiences sudden appearance of the solution to his problems which is termed as “insight”. ILLUMINATION INSIGHT STAGE Creative ideas bursts forth from its preconscious processing into conscious awareness or the conscious mind is filled with new ides and insights for the solution. VERIFICATION (EVALUATION) STAGE During verification stage, the insight is tested to see if it is satisfactorily solves the problem. If not satisfactory, the thinker is back at the beginning of the creative process. VERIFICATION (EVALUATION) STAGE If the solution is satisfactory, creative thinker will reach to next stage i.e. revision. REVISION STAGE Any modifications needed are made during revision stage. Creative thinker never considers his solution as perfect or final. It is open for modification or revision at any time as essential. PROCESS OF CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS OF CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING Process of creative problem solving has some stages. These are; Objective finding Fact finding Problem finding Idea finding Solution finding Acceptance finding OBJECTIVE FINDING In objective finding stage; goal has been identifed, challenge and future direction determined. It is the initial steps which opens the door to use the creative problem solving process. FACT FINDING In fact finding stage; All the data that pertains to the situation should be assesed and reviewed. Who’s involved, what’s involved, when, where, and why it’s important. CONT... In this step, all the relevant data is collected and taken into consideration to review the objective and begin to innovate. And, a list of the information related to the situation should be made. PROBLEM FINDING Problem finding step is to define the problem. In this step, we explore the facts and data to find the problems. This is about making sure that we are focusing on the right problem. IDEA FINDING In this process, possible solutions are started to generate. Solutions can be generated by asking opinion with other people, by using creativity tools like brainstorming. IDEA FINDING Do not evaluate ideas, instead concentrate on generating as many ideas as possible. CONTINUATION It has been designed to force person to think differently about own problem and to eventually come up with some really innovative solutions. SOLUTION FINDING In this step, evaluation of ideas takes place. Usual ideas are critiqued for its usefulness. Usefulness is judged on the basis of cost, moral or legal implications, timeliness, feasibility and effectiveness. ACCEPTANCE FINDING Question which permit in this stage is “how might I get acceptance for this idea?” “What is the worst thing that can happen to the idea ?” and then try to think of possible way to overcome. FACTORS INFLUENCING TO FOSTER CREATIVITY FACTORS INFLUENCING TO FOSTER CREATIVITY Environment Education and training with rich curricular and co- curricular experiences Freedom to respond to solutions in varied ways. FACTORS INFLUENCING TO FOSTER CREATIVITY Removal of hesitation and fear Provide appropriate opportunities and atmosphere for creative expression Encourage self-confidence. BARRIERS TO CREATIVE THINKING Habits of doing routine activities Rigidness Fear of failure Fear of ambiguity Fear of taking risk Imaginary boundaries THANK YOU
