**Physical, Cognitive and Socio-emotional Development** **Objectives:** \*What are the Characteristics of Children in Concrete Operational stage? \*What is the Importance of Information Processing skills in affecting child cognitive development? \*What are the Cognitive Milestone in Primary Schoolers? \*Lastly, What are the different factors that affect the socio emotional growth of the primary-schoolers? **Cognitive Development of Pre-Schooler** Cognitive refers to Child's Ability to learn, think and solve problem. It is important for knowledge growth. **What are the Characteristics of Children in Concrete Operational stage:** [Receptive Language(3-5 yrs old)]- The child being able to understand verbal and Non-verbal communication. Example: Can understand the waving of hand. [Pre matching-] The child is able to match identical objects, colors, shape and symbol. Example: Connecting Apple to its corresponding word. Pre reading and Pre math- The child is able to recite the Alphabet song and numbers in sequence. [Pre reading and Pre math-] The child is able to recite the Alphabet song and numbers in sequence. **Importance of Information Processing skills and How it Affect Child Cognitive Development** Information Processing Skills refer to the mental processes involved in taking in, understanding, and using information like: \*[Concentration] -- It helps the child to focus on activities and ignore distraction. \*[Processing speed]- Where a child can analyze and process information quickly. \*[Reasoning and problem solving] -- Where a Child can use logic and critical thinking to solve problems. **This skills are important for child's cognitive development:** \*laying foundation for learning, problem solving and overall academic success. \*Make them able to follow instructions and comprehend stories. \*Participate in conversation more effectively, and solve problem easily. **Cognitive Milestone In Primary Schoolers** **[Language Development ]** ✓Children increased their vocabulary, allowing them to express themselves and understand others. ✓Children can read fluency and have better comprehension. ✓ Children can write names. **[ Reasoning and Problem Solving ]** ✓Understand concepts like what is bigger and taller ✓Children use logic and reasoning to solve problems ✓ They learn to group objects and ideas based on shared characteristics. **[ Memory and Attention ]** ✓ This milestone allows children to hold more information in mind and manipulate it effectively. ✓ They have the ability to focus ✓They can predict what will happen next in the story. **[ Socio- emotional Development ]** ✓Children develop a better understanding of others thoughts, feelings and perspective. ✓ They become more emphathetic and learn to mavigate social situations and build relationships. **[ Metacognition]** ✓Ask a lot of question, specially "why" ✓ Children become more aware of their own learning process ✓ They develop strategies for remembering information and problem solving. **Socio-emotional development of primary schoolers** In early childhood stage children can say fully sentences and express their feelings and emotions with others. Primary Schoolers belong to the fourth stage of Erikson's psychosocial stages. Here, Children have to resolve the issue on Industry vs. Inferiority. [Industry] -- Child's involvement in situation where patience work is demanded of them. [Inferiority] -- The feeling created when a child get a feeling of failure when they cannot finish or master their school work. **Understanding The Self** [One's self-concept] is the knowledge about the self, such as beliefs regarding personality traits, personality characteristics, values, abilities, goals, and roles. It also involves a sense of belonging and acceptance, a sense of good, and a Sense of being capable of doing good. Having a healthy self-concept does not mean that a child thinks he/she is better than others. It means that a child likes herself/himself, if they feels accepted by his/her family and friends, and believes that he/she can do well Primary school children's self-concept is influenced not only by their parents but also by a growing number of people they begin to interact with, including teachers and classmates. Children have a growing understanding of their place in the world. They already know that they can please their parents and teachers. They are comfortable and show confidence in doing things they are good at, but also show frustration in things that they find difficult **Factors that Affect their Socio-emotional Growth** **[ Family support:]** The encouragement and care from parents, family helps to build child's steem, confidence and ability to unteract positively in the world. **[ Parenting style:]** It plays an important role in psycho-social development of children. A balanced parenting style which is neither permissive nor authoritative is acceptable and helps in social and emotional development of children. **[ School years:]** Children tend to become increasingly self confident and able to cope well with social interactions. Fairness and equality become important to them as they learn to care for people. **[ Building friendship:]** making friends is crucial but very important part of children's social and emotional growth. **[ Anti social behavior:]** When children poke, pull, hit or kick other children when they are first introduced, it is fairly normal. **Parents and Teachers can help children in making friends by considering the ff:** 1.Exposing children to kid-rich environment 2.Creating a play group in class and letting children interact with each other. 3.Reainding about their bad behavior that it hurt others 4.Coordinating with parents and other teachers so Children will have greater opportunity to interact with other Children.
