It is the coexistence of diverse cultures, where culture includes racial, religious, or cultural groups and is manifested in customary behaviors, values, patterns of thinking, and **COMMUNICATIVE STYLES.** - **Multicultural settings** are spaces where people from diverse cultural backgrounds converge, whether in local contexts such as classrooms, workplaces, or global contexts like international organizations or online platforms. ### Intercultural Communication The image shows two cartoon characters facing each other, with one looking to the left and one to the right. Doc lan, a Filipino researcher is collaborating with a Malaysian colleague, Ma'am Anji for an experimental research. Both may belong to the broader Southeast Asian region but come from distinct ethnic origins, speaking different languages and practicing distinct cultural traditions. ### High and Low Context Communication According to Gamble and Gamble (2008), communication style among cultures differs, it may be high context or low-context communication. - **High-context communication** is a tradition-linked communication system which adheres strongly to being indirect. - **Low-context communication** is a system that works on straightforward communication. ### Miscommunication in Intercultural Communication "It has become a widespread notion that speakers' use of different languages results in intercultural miscommunication and misunderstanding. Language variation is “defined by use, not by the user" (Youssef, 2015). ### Common Language Registers: 1. **Formal:** Professional and structured. 2. **Neutral:** Non-emotional, fact-based communication. 3. **Informal:** Conversational and casual language. ### Formal Language Register Guidelines - Avoid contractions (e.g., can't, don't) unless quoting directly. - Spell out numbers under one hundred. - Write in third-person perspective. - Avoid slang, idioms, exaggerations, and clichés. - Use acronyms and abbreviations only after first defining them. - Employ good transition words (e.g., however, nevertheless). - Use complete sentences throughout. ### Neutral Language Register - Neutrality can be observed in technical writings such as reviews, news articles, and product descriptions. - Neutral language uses short and simple sentence structures and is free from colloquialisms. - It is non-emotional and remains objective and unbiased. - Giving directions, instructions, and presentations. ### Informal Language Register - Informal writing is conversational. It includes text messages, emails, diaries, and journal entries. - This type of language uses many nonstandard grammatical forms, such as slang, incomplete sentences, or regional phrasing.
