Introduction The term communication originates from the Latin word “communis,” which means common. Communication occurs as an interaction between a sender and a receiver. The communication mode refers to the channel used to express one's intent; it is the medium through which thoughts are conveyed. A fundamental goal of communication is to bridge cultural differences, fostering a deeper understanding of multicultural communication and the trends of globalization. Elements of Communication 1. Speaker 2. Message 3. Receiver 4. Channel/Medium 5. Feedback 6. Noise 7. Communicative Situation/Context Concepts Language A system of traditional spoken, written, or manual symbols that allows individuals, as part of a social group and active participants in its culture, to express their thoughts and feelings. Modes of Communications (1) Verbal, (2) Non-verbal, (3) Written, (4) Visual Context of Communication (1) Intrapersonal Communication (2) Interpersonal Communication Communication and Globalization Globalization Globalization describes the growing interdependence of the world's economies, cultures, and populations, brought about by cross-border trade in goods and services, technology, and flows of investment, people, and information. Globalization means the speedup of movements and exchanges (of human beings, goods, services, capital, technologies, or cultural practices) all over the planet. One of the effects of globalization is that it promotes and increases interactions between different regions and populations around the globe. What is a simple definition of globalization? The increasing interconnectedness and interdependence of the many peoples of the world who all live and work on one large planet. In short, it is how people all over the Earth interact with one another in terms of economics, politics, and culture. Roles in Communication As globalization fosters interconnectedness, it also highlights cultural disparities that shape communication practices. Effective communication is essential for navigating these differences, as culture influences verbal and non-verbal interactions, impacting business operations and interpersonal relationships. A global language allows for communication between different cultures. Language has always been the focal point of cultural identity. Globalization significantly influences communication by reshaping cultural interactions, language use, and the dissemination of information. This transformation is driven by media and technology advancements, which facilitate cultural homogenization and diversity. Intercultural Communication As noted by Guydkunst, W. & Y. Kim (1992) in Gamble, T. & Gamble M. (2013), intercultural communication is the process of interpreting and conveying meanings between individuals from diverse cultures. This communication takes on various forms, including: 1. Interracial Communication – interpreting and sharing meanings with individuals from different races. 2. Interethnic Communication – interaction with individuals of different ethnic origins. 3. International Communication – communication between persons representing different nations. 4. Intracultural Communication – interaction with members of the same racial or ethnic group or co-culture as yours. a. culture – system of knowledge, beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that are acquired, shared, and used by its members during daily living. b. co-culture – composed of members of the same general culture who differ in some ethnic or sociological way from the parent culture. In the Philippine culture, the disabled, the elderly, punks, and gangsters are some examples of it. Culture C al lim b o at Gl e Global Culture Climate It pertains to the overarching trends, attitudes, and behaviors that define the cultural landscape of our interconnected world. It embodies a wide-ranging view of how cultural practices, values, and interactions develop and affect each other across various societies and regions. Diversity Shaped by migration, colonialism, and globalization, leads to the blending of ideas and traditions, fostering creativity but also posing risks of cultural homogenization and erosion. Key Complexity characteristics Arises from the interplay of geography, climate, economics, of Global and evolving technology, which shape societal structures and enable rapid cultural exchange across borders. Culture Climate Dynamism Refers to the constant evolution of cultures in response to internal and external forces like globalization, technological advancements, and societal values, enabling adaptation to global challenges such as climate change and fostering either cultural convergence or conflict. Impact of Global Culture Climate in Communication Adaptability and Flexibility Cultural adaptability is an individual’s ability to vary communication and management styles depending on the culture and environment in which they are operating. But to work flexibly, we must be able to accommodate different cultures – and know how to adapt communication for cultural differences. Cultural Sensitivity and Awareness To be culturally sensitive means you do not believe one culture is superior to another. In other words, you recognize differences without assigning a specific value to any one culture. Cultural awareness requires self-reflection to identify your own specific cultural beliefs, values, and attitudes and how those impact your behaviors. Challenges of Navigating Multiple Cultural Context 1. Different Communications Styles 2. Different Attitudes Toward Conflict 3. Different Approaches to Completing Tasks 4. Different Decision-Making Styles 5. Different Attitudes Toward Disclosure 6. Different Approaches to Knowing Role of non-verbal communication This function makes a spoken message more clear Reinforcement to avoid misunderstandings. Substitution It can be more expressive and meaningful than words. They sometimes send opposite messages. This is where the Contradiction contradiction function comes in. Accentuation To accentuate means to put emphasis on something. The regulation function helps us take turns in speaking, without Regulations using any words, so we don’t interrupt others. Strategies for Communicating Effectively in a Global Culture Climate Being Open-minded and Empathetic Cultural intelligence is the ability to recognize and adapt to cultural differences. It is an individual's skill to relate to others and work efficiently in culturally diverse situations. To develop one's cultural intelligence, one should be able to educate oneself, be adaptable, seek feedback, and be culturally immersed. Developing Cultural Intelligence Always be open to new ideas, and put yourself in the other person's shoes before doing anything that might offend them personally and culturally. Keep in mind that culture is diverse. Using Inclusive Language And Avoiding Stereotypes To avoid stereotypes, one should always be wary of their words when talking with other people. Learn and use inclusive language in a sentence since it can make people feel included, valued, and empowered. What is the Role of Communication in a Globalized World?
