GROUP 1 Algabre, Joanne S. Cabañog, Fatima Lourdes F. Cerilo, Rose Ann Philosophy of Music Education Presented by: Group 1 Philosophy of Music Education - refers to the value of music, the value of teaching music, and how to practically utilize those values in the music classroom. Emile Jaques-Dalcroze (July 6, 1865 - July 1, 1950) Emile Jaques-Dalcroze (July 6, 1865 - July 1, 1950) was a Swiss music teacher and composer who originated the eurythmics system of musical instruction. Emile Jaques-Dalcroze He believed that music was an outlet for emotional and feelingful expression. His research in physical movement was aimed towards “freeing his students of conflicts between mind and body, between feeling and expression.” Emile Jaques-Dalcroze To combat the lack of emotional literacy in music, he utilized movement and kinesthetic awareness of the body to develop skills in analyzing, interpreting, and experiencing music in an emotionally and physically natural way, creating “harmony between the temperament and the will, between impulse and JACQUES- DALCROZE METHOD Jacques-Dalcroze Method often referred to as “Dalcroze Eurhythmics” which specifically teaches students concepts of rhythm, structure, and musical expression through movement. Jacques-Dalcroze Method Eurhythmics, solfège, and improvisation are the three main components of this pedagogical approach, which incorporate most prominently movement, kinesthesia, and high-order, imaginative thinking. Jacques-Dalcroze Method In utilizing their sense of kinesthesia, Jacques- Dalcroze argued that people “would be in a state of attention and concentration; they would be alerted to the slightest change in sound or rhythm; they could consciously develop new responses or vary old ones.” Jacques-Dalcroze Method With this high-order, imaginative thinking, Jacques-Dalcroze believed that musicians could freely express their internal feelingful experiences primarily through movement, and secondarily on external musical instruments. Audiation “aud” which pertains to sound or hearing and the verb “ideate” which means to form an idea or to think. Audiation refers to the ability to hear and understand music mentally, even when no sound is present. this skill is crucial in Dalcroze’s approach which focuses on integrating internal mental processes with external musical performance Key Points of Dalcroze’s Approach 1.Internal and External Connection Dalcroze aimed to bridge the gap between what musicians hear internally and how they perform externally. This connection is crucial for effective music making. Key Points of Dalcroze’s Approach 2. Importance of Physical Movement Dalcroze incorporated physical movement into his teaching. He believed that combining hearing, singing, and physical response could enhance a musician’s ability to internalize and experience music deeply. Key Points of Dalcroze’s Approach 3. Inner Hearing Dalcroze defined inner hearing as the ability to imagine and understand music in your mind without needing an instrument. This is crucial for performing music effectively. Key Points of Dalcroze’s Approach 4. Practical Implications In practice, Dalcroze’s method emphasizes that effective musical performance relies heavily on audiation Key Points of Dalcroze’s Approach 5. Ear Training Audiation is central to his ear training methods. It helps musicians internalize musical intervals and relationships through sound rather than just reading notation or understanding instrument mechanics. In summary, audiation in the Jacques-Dalcroze Method is about developing the internal ability to hear and understand music mentally. This skill is essential for both internal musical comprehension and effective performance, and Jacques-Dalcroze's methods aim to integrate this mental skill with physical and practical aspects of music education.
