Personal Notes: 5 Section 2 Past Simple – Past Continuous Form Statements Regular verbs Irregular verbs My brother helped me a lot. I got a new bike for my birthday. Nothing happened last week. We had tea for breakfast. She wanted to go to Paris. (pronunciation!) She flew to New York. The film started at eight o'clock. (pronunc.!) They gave me £10. We take the infinitive of the verb and add We learn the irregular past tense form. the ending -ed. Sometimes there is a question word at the beginning of the question: Who did you see at the party? Why did you hurry so much? 6 Use We use the past simple to talk or write about activities and situations that happened completely in the past: The activities and situations are over in the present. Usually, there is a time indication of the past (last year, two days ago, in 2003, etc). He lived in London from 1995 to 2004. Did you see Sarah yesterday? They didn't go to Italy on holiday last summer. Christopher Columbus discovered America. Be careful: In German we can often use the "Perfekt" to talk about activities and situations in the past but in English you must use the past tense. German: Ich habe gestern Sam in der Stadt getroffen. English: I met Sam in town yesterday. We use the past simple to describe a series of short events in the past. Last night I came home at 7.00 pm. Then I had dinner, watched television for two hours, then took the dog for a walk and, finally, went to bed around 11.00 pm. Form Statements Negatives My father was painting the living room. She was not sitting outside. We were watching television all evening. They weren’t playing football. We use the past continuous to talk about actions that are in progress in the past and that are interrupted by other shorter actions (past simple). I was practising the piano when the phone rang. Personal Notes: 10 Section 3 can - must - mustn't have got - have a... there is/are - there was/were can - must - mustn't Form Can and must are modal auxiliaries. Modal auxiliaries must be followed by a full verb (or be or have) without to I can swim. They must leave now. only have one form for all persons. You must go now.
