DAY 1: IMPORTANCE OF SCIENCE WAVES Unit 1 – Module L AND THEIR APPLICATI ONS STANDARD MS-PS4-2 Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials DAY 2- DAY TO DAY APPLICATION OF REFRACTION AND LAB -SIMULATION ON REFRACTION List some day-to-day applications of refraction Explain what optical illusion is Investigate refraction of light in different media VOCABULARIES OPTICAL ILLUSION What does illusion mean? STARTER It is a deceptive/pretended appearance or impression. WHAT IS OPTICAL ILLUSION Your mind can play tricks on you because of refraction. The straw to the right is an example of an optical illusion caused by refraction. When you look at an object that is underwater, the light reflecting off the object doesn’t travel in a straight line, because our brain always interprets light traveling in a straight line, the image that we perceive does not match reality. This is optical illusion SEARCH FOR THE WORLD OPTICAL ILLUSION CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING Think about a young bird learning to catch fish, What makes it difficult for the bird to be successful? WHICH ONE IS THE ACTUAL OR REAL FISH? EXPLAIN Due to refraction, the fish may not actually be where it appears to. Day to day experience of refraction (optical illusion) After watching the video write in your copybook what you understand about refraction making optical illusions in one sentence. Share your group response to your GROUP ACTIVITY - LAB SIMULATION – TAKE OUT YOUR DEVICE AND INVESTIGATE HOW DIFFERENT LIGHT COLORS Click on theREFRACTS link below IN GLASS PRISM https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/bending -light/latest/bending-light_en.html Click on the tab “ prism” Choose the light with many rays Investigate how different colors of light refract through a glass prism and explain why the different colors have different refraction ability INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY Worksheet 3 DAY 3& 4: PROJECT PRESENTATIONS
