Living and Non-Living things September 26, 2024 Introduction to Living and Non-Living Things Understanding Life Forms Around Us Living things are organisms that grow, reproduce, and respond to their environment, such as animals and plants. Non-living things, like rocks and water, do not have these characteristics. Examples include a dog (living) and a chair (non-living). What Are Living Things? Living things grow and develop. They reproduce and create new life. They respond to their environment. Identifying Living Things: Plants and Animals Plants Animals Grouping Living Things: Plant Kingdom Characteristics of Types of Plants Plant Examples Plants Grouping Living Things: Animal Kingdom Animal Mammals Birds Reptiles Classifications Needs of Living Things Basic Requirements for Survival Air is necessary for breathing. Water is essential for hydration. Food provides energy and nutrients. Life Processes of Living Things Living things perform essential processes for survival. These include nutrition, where they obtain food; respiration, which helps them release energy; excretion to remove waste; growth, indicating their ability to develop; reproduction for species continuation; and response, which allows them to react to changes in their environment. Wants vs. Needs Understanding the Difference Wants are desires for things we would like to have, while needs are essential for survival. Living things require basic needs like food and water to thrive, while wants can be luxuries that enhance our lives but are not crucial. Basic Needs of All Living Things Essential for Survival Air is crucial for respiration and energy. Water aids in hydration and nutrient transport. Food provides energy and essential nutrients. Water is crucial for all living things as it aids in vital processes like hydration, nutrient transport, and temperature regulation. It supports metabolic reactions and is essential for growth and reproduction. Without water, living organisms cannot survive, making it a fundamental need for life. Air is vital for all living organisms. It provides oxygen necessary for respiration, which is essential for energy production. Plants also require air for photosynthesis, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Without air, life as we know it would not exist. Food is vital for providing energy and nutrients to living things. It helps organisms grow, reproduce, and maintain their health. Different types of food supply various nutrients that support life processes like respiration and growth. Animals and plants obtain food in unique ways; for example, animals eat other living things while plants create their food through photosynthesis. Understanding the role of food enhances our appreciation for life. Shelter is vital for living things as it provides protection from harsh weather, predators, and environmental hazards. It creates a safe space for growth, reproduction, and rest. Various forms of shelter, such as homes, nests, and burrows, offer security and comfort to different species. Without adequate shelter, many organisms would struggle to survive in their habitats. Summary of Living and Non- Living Things In this lesson, we learned about living things, including plants and animals, and their unique characteristics. We discussed essential needs like air, water, food, and shelter that support life. We also explored the differences between wants and needs, emphasizing how basic needs are vital for survival.
