Grade 6 Science 7 10 24 23 1: UNIT 1: ULE MOD nd life Cell a ❖ *Difference Between Living and Non-Living Things* *Living Things* Living things have specific characteristics that make them different from non-living things * -Cells*: All living things are made up of cells. Cells are the basic units of life, like tiny building blocks that carry out all the functions necessary for an organism to live. Some living things, like bacteria, are made of just one cell, while others, like humans and trees, are made up of trillions of cells. ❖ what are the other six characteristics that all living things have in common ? this includes organization or growth and development reproduction response to stimulate maintain internal conditions and using energy 1 organization : All living things are organized according to different structures that perform different functions grow and develop : living things grow and develop meaning they increase in size and go through changes during their lifespans reproduction living things create new living through the process of reproduction respond to internal and external stimuli : the changes in their environment is called external stimuli , and hunger or fatigue is internal stimuli homeostasis which is the ability to maintain steady internal conditions like sweating when it is hot Metabolism*: Living things have a metabolism, which means they take in substances (like food, water, and air) and use them to create energy. If someone doesn't display each of these characteristics is not a living thing ❖ THE CELL THEORY cells make up all living things. cells are the basic building blocks for developing tissues, organs, and fully developed living creatures. cells can only develop from other cells. ❖ Unicellular and multicellular Organisms 2 Organisms are organized in different ways , living things that are made of only one cell are called "unicellular organisms " example: paramecium , amoeba, bacteria And living things that are made of two ore more cells are called "multicellular organisms " as plant , human being , animals ❖ Microscopes Light microscopes :. Use light and lenses to enlarge an image up to 1500 time their original size ( sometimes object must be stained with a dye in order to see any details ) Electron microscopes use magnetic field to focus a beam of electrons through an object or onto an object surface. An electron microscope can magnify an object up to 10 000 time or more Iti has two main type transmission electron microscope TEM And scanning electron microscope SEM +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 3
