Example Migration Migration - as old as human civilization - According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), it is the movement of a person or groups from one territory to another - Reasons: Political, cultural, environmental, economic Migration - “Push” and “Pull” factors Push - motivates people to leave (food shortage, war, flood, among others) Pull - atacrs people to their destination. Migration Types of Migration a. Internal Migration – within one’s own country. Ex. Filipino Muslims migrate to the Visayas region to avoid heavy militarization in their area. b. Effects of globalization Good: (Williamson, 1998) - Provides an increase in the level of global output - Brings the best technology and other forms of intellectual capital to countries that cannot produce it - International capital flows can transfer savings form countries where the marginal product of capital is low to those where it is high - Influences the distribution and levels of income Effects of globalization Bad: (Castells) - Erosion and decay of the cultures and traditions of a country caused by the transfer of culture by stronger nations to developing countries. - Unrestricted global trade will yield to an increasing inequality between developed and developing countries (Asian countries vs Africa)
