Geography Task 1 Mexico Mexico: Mexico has many different issues of healthcare, education and social security; these can all be linked to issues of government funding and poor effort from the country to try and have change. Mexico has 130 million people and the country still lacks basic issues which can be linked to these wellbeing issues. Initiatives which provide help include the MSSI the Mexican Social Security Institute which is a government organisation. They help these issues by giving people money and provide funding to the area which will then allow them to have help. The healthcare system was hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, with the country suffering the world’s third-highest number of deaths. The government was accused of negligence and politicisation of the response. The Mexican people didn’t have any great access to healthcare. The first level is the INSABI. This program focuses on care for those who are not covered by either the IMSS or ISSSTE. In 2019 INSABI was provided by President Lopez Obrador which aims to help with the widespread healthcare of Mexico. The MSSI was able to give access all around the country even during the global pandemic during covid 19 this ultimately meant people pay for the use of medical equipment and to see a doctor. Rates without healthcare doubled from 8.8% (2018) to 16.5% (2020). 31/32 states also improved an increase of households without healthcare. Two different healthcare systems makes things confusing for the people as people would still need to pay out of pocket for the equipment they wanted to use. Mexico's life expectancy ranks 94th overall with 75.3 years. Primary school (primaria), comprising grades 1–6; junior high school (secundaria), comprising grades 7–9; and high school (preparatoria), comprising grades 10–12. Key issues in Mexican education have to do with insufficient enrollments and high dropout rates beyond the primary level, insufficient supply of upper secondary schools (particularly in rural areas), and low student achievement levels. UNESCO aims to bring education to all parts of Mexico and focus on improving education for all people if they have a disability, or are financially poor. This organisation tries to help people recover from post-pandemic learning and create educational opportunities and sustainability seen to combat high dropout rates in Mexico. The average years of schooling is 9.22 years compared to the expected 12 which is 3 years, UNESCO helped this by building facilities there, co-designed public policies, programs, projects and innovative strategies. Mexico has high literacy rates as well with 99.50% which is seen to be steadily increasing with the years of schooling growing. Although Mexico isn’t the best it has had a general increase which is seen to have halted during the covid period. MSSI provides financial protection and healthcare to workers and their families. Based on contributions and years of service. For workers who are unable to work due to illness or injury. For dependents of deceased workers. Maternity leave, Childcare support In some cases, housing assistance and recreational services. The people of Mexico want to have a sort of stability in their lives which is what the MSSI aims to do when helping people. ISSSTE offers comprehensive medical care, including general consultations, specialist services, diagnostic tests, and emergency care. Provides inpatient services, including surgeries and other hospital-based treatments Supplies prescription medications and manages pharmacies within its healthcare network. Implements programs for preventive medicine, health promotion, and wellness. Approximately 19% of Mexicans are covered under the pension system provided by IMSS. The pension system has faced challenges, including low coverage rates among informal workers and concerns about sustainability. Social security programs, including pensions and healthcare, contribute to reducing poverty among retirees and vulnerable populations. However, the impact is uneven due to the higher concentration of benefits among formal sector workers. The MSSI both aimw to improve these wellbeing issues in Mexico and although they do help increase support this doesn’t have much of an effect on the overall population and these issues still seem to be a problem in Mexico and this doesn’t allow for the country to be at its best.
