Geogra phy Revision L.I: To revise over this term’s content. To feel confident in my understanding of Urbanisation. S.C:I can confidently and accurately discuss a range of topics within Urbanisation is when more people move from rural areas to live in cities. Urbanisation This causes the cities to get bigger and busier. It means definition changes like more buildings, jobs, and city services. Issues of Rapid Urbanisation Rapid urbanisation often means that the area is overpopulated. This causes many issues including: Pollution (of water and air) Subsidence Traffic congestion Slums/ housing concerns Slums The UN defines slums as not meeting the following basic living standards: Durable, permanent housing that protects against extreme climate conditions. Enough living space, which means no more than three people sharing the same room. Easy access to safe water in sufficient amounts at an affordable price. Access to acceptable sanitation. This is a private or public toilet shared by a reasonable amount of people. The resident’s right to live in their home. Impact of Slums on… Environment Society Economy High pollution! - No privacy for Other citizens of the - Burning of trash those living in country may have ruins air quality slums to pay taxes in - indoor pollution - Easy for disease order to help the (no proper indoor to spread people who live in ventilation) - High crime rates the slums. - polluted water from lack of proper Many people living waste removal in slums would not earn much, or any Slums: Sustainable Solution Focusing on upgrading slums rather than removing them has been much more successful. The redevelopment aims to give the people economic, social and basic services. Ways to upgrade have included: - Increasing the number of toilets available - Increasing access to safe drinking water - Protecting from natural hazards such as floods (by having tanks collect rainwater etc.) - Land ownership for the residents. If they feel secure they are more likely to invest in their housing and community when possible Impact of Traffic on… Environment Society Economy - Decreases air For those with a - Paying lots of quality from all vehicle: money for fuel the vehicles that - Long commutes - Paying for are being driven that can take repairs - This contributes hours to climate - Lots of car change accidents For those without a vehicle: - Extremely Traffic: Sustainable Solution Congestion pricing. Charging those who are using the roads a fee. This fee deters many people from driving their own vehicles and chose to walk, use public transport or carpool instead. The money collected from the drivers can be put towards having better public transportation.
