The Case For Gearwork Amanda Miller - USMC/ Fire ghter Donning gear in operation preparation Operational success corresponds with operational readiness Train frequently, intelligently and hard in gear Gearwork can be done by anyone at anytime, anywhere 2 Dimensions of Gearwork: 1. Most challenging operations drive intensity that are dialed into mastery of human excellence in hellish conditions 2. Do gearwork more frequently based on amount of time you wear regular to balance out the e ect Fire ghting and Gearwork Donning any level of PPE with the intent of improving reground performance Struggling and failure should be a prerequisite for success and helps to overcome a fear of failure Don gear more often, operate with each other and other companies Preparation is required for true success Gearwork should be encouraged and implemented Gear is the great equalizer Poor coordination is what happens when we aren’t used to gear Moving well in gear is professional and moral Point of training is for the worst possible moment Knowing and willfully continuing a course of incompetence, we are party to its deadly eventuality Fire ghters have ignored the bloody writing on the wall Resistance Bene ts of gearwork and en masse Reduced risk of injury, cardiovascular disease, Improved stress immunity, cooperative behavior, decision making and coordination Maslow’s Hierarchy Sense of belonging equates to actual safety in the human psyche Being outcast causes pain (teased for wearing/ training in gear) fi fi fi ff fi fi Not wearing gear is disease that was handed down to us Value comfort and tradition over LODD scienti c evidence Distain for training over all, not just gearwork The Mortal cost of profession, de nes the profession but until the lethality of the job a ects us the concept remains abstract Do not confuse luck with competence Who are we? Donning gear a ects our mind set more than we realize Enclosed cognition - gear directly a ects our identity, thinking and decision making How does a lack of re ghting a ect our minds (EMS, Lift assists…) Identify erodes and moral and may contribute to PTSD and mental health Don’t feel like re ghters, inner most re fades Positives for Moral and Identity H.O.T - Hands on Training in gear Rejuvenates our spirt Shared values by attendants Allow public to see training and working in gear allows us to realize public support and a rmation Working in gear humbles us and strengthens our fellowship with those working besides us What do we do?
