# Another Loss for Frankenstein ## Chapter 11 We landed at 8:00 p.m. We walked on the shore. Then we went to our room at the inn. We looked out our window. We could see the water and mountains. I had been calm during the day. But at night I was afraid. My right hand grasped a gun I kept in my pocket. I jumped at every noise. I decided I wouldn’t give up until the monster was dead. Or I was dead. I didn’t want to fight in our room. I knew Elizabeth would be afraid. I decided to check all the rooms. I walked up and down the halls. Suddenly, I heard a terrible scream. An awful thought came to my mind. The monster wasn’t going to kill me. He was after Elizabeth! I heard the scream again. I rushed to our room. Why didn’t I die that night? Why am I here to tell this story? Elizabeth was dead. Her body was thrown across the bed. I saw the finger marks on her neck. My lovely bride was gone. How could I see this and still live? I passed out. I woke up. People were all around me. They looked horrified. I looked to the window. I saw the monster staring in. He was grinning. He pointed to my dead wife. I pulled out the gun. I fired. But he got away. He ran and dove into the lake. Some men helped me look for him. We used boats and nets. But we couldn’t find him. I was so sad. I had never known such sorrow. Four people who had been close to me were gone. It was all so horrible. I began to worry about the rest of my family. Would the monster kill them too? I returned to Geneva. Thankfully, everyone was alive. I told my father what had happened. It was too much for him. He loved Elizabeth very much. His heart was broken. A few days later, he died in my arms. What became of me? I don’t know. They called me a madman. I was locked up for many months. Finally, I got better. I thought about how I would get revenge. I decided to go to a judge. I told him the whole story. I was afraid he would think I was crazy. But he listened. All the parts of my story fit together. Thankfully, he believed me. I wanted all the help I could get. I wanted to find the murderer. “ I would help you if I could, ” the judge said. “ But it’s been many months. He could be anywhere. And he’s stronger than any man.” “ It doesn’t matter. I’ll go alone. He’s never far from me. That way he gets to watch the pain he causes. He laughs at what he’s done. I’ll find him and kill him. Or I will die trying!” ## Chapter 12: The Chase I decided to leave Geneva forever. I couldn’t stay there. There were too many sad memories. That night, I went to the cemetery. I visited the graves of my loved ones. Clouds covered the moonlight. I knelt on the grass. “I swear to find the monster that caused all this sorrow, ” I said. “ I will fight him to the death. I call upon the spirits of the dead. Help me to do my work. Let the monster know about agony. Let him feel the misery I feel now.” I heard a loud and evil laugh. Then it died away. I heard a whisper. “I’m happy now, Frankenstein. You have chosen to live. You’ll be unhappy the rest of your life. You’ll be alone, as I am.” Then it laughed again. The moon broke through the clouds. I saw the monster. He was running fast. I couldn’t catch him. I’ve chased the monster all over the world. Sometimes he leaves me clues. He wants me to chase him. If I give up, he fears I might die. He wants me to live. My life was miserable. I was only happy when I was sleeping. I could dream of my loved ones. I saw my father. I heard Elizabeth’s sweet voice. I saw Henry enjoying life. I don’t know what the monster felt. Sometimes he left me notes. “My power over you is still strong. Come closer, my enemy. We will fight for our lives. But you must suffer until then. Follow me to a cold, icy place.” I got a sled and some dogs. I set out on the frozen ocean. I chased the monster for three weeks. I almost gave up. Then one night I saw him. I had hope again! I came closer to him. But there was a huge roar. The ice split and cracked. I was left drifting on a piece of ice. It kept getting smaller. I was preparing to die. I floated for hours. All but one of my dogs died. Then I saw your ship. I was surprised to see it out so far. I was able to move my ice toward it. I am certain the creature is going north. That’s why I asked where you were headed. If you were going south, I wouldn’t have come aboard. If I die and you find the monster, kill him! He’ll try to make you feel sorry for him. But he’s a liar. Kill him! Only then will my soul rest.
