The Intro to Hebrew Bible and Some Foundational Stories in Genesis The Creation and the Sin of Adam and Eve Cain and Abel—The First Murder Babel Tower The Flood and the Ark of Noah Torah+Nevi’im+Ketubim= Tanakh • "The Five Books of Moses(Pentateuch), that is the Torah, describe how the nation of Israel was formed and took possession of the Promised Land.“ • The Nevi'im, or Prophets, tell the story of the Israelites in the Promised Land, describing the establishment and development of the monarchy and the proclamation of the prophets' messages to the people. • The Ketubim, or sacred writings, include literature and poetry that examine evil and death, as well as some history books. Notable Characteristics of Hebrew Bible • The Books written over a long period of time (at least hundreds of years), by different authors, in different contexts. • A collection of writings from different genres (Book X Library O). • Not concerned with historical accuracy-God is the master of history. • Written from a confessional perspective - God's promises and slow fulfillment. • Ethical Monotheism!!! Evolutionary Model vs. Revolutionary Model. • BUT, coexistence of monotheism and polytheism within the religion of Israel. • Emphasizes trust in God - "though He will not" A Creation Story in Genesis(chapter 1) 1 When God(Elohim) began to create the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God(Elohim) swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God(Elohim) saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. 6 And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. 8 God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
