(the City of Chicago is almost entirely in Cook County.) St. Louis City is one of the only independent cities in the United States, About 300,000 people live in the City of St. Louis A county is a specific region of a state or country. While the United States is made up of 50 states, it also has 3,144 counties. In the US, a county is a separate administrative area of a state St. Louis County is the most populous county in the State of Missouri with about 1 Million residents. They can issue ordinances and codes, raise taxes and build and maintain infrastructures such as roads and parks and operate other programs. There are over 89 municipalities in St. Louis County. A very large number for its size. The reason many of these municipalities were created was to keep communities racially and economically homogeneous (everyone the same). Types of Municipal (City) Governments Bigger Cities Small and Medium Towns CIty of St. Louis (is also a county!) Mayor - City Council System (Board of Alderman) Each ward elects and is represented by a single Alderman. The Mayor and President of the Board of Alderman are both elected city wide.
