Experiment 5 study lathe and milling machines Dr mutlag shafi Aim: To study the various parts of Lathe and Milling machines and to gain knowledge on the basic operations that can be done on the machines. Objectives: Describes how lathe & milling machines operate; Identify the various types of lathe & milling machines; December 9, 2 COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Ex 5: A Demonstrate on Lathe Machine Ex 5: Demonstrate on Lathe Machine To study the various parts of a lathe and to gain knowledge on the basic operations that can be done on a lathe. A lathe machine is single point cutting tools that rotates a workpiece about an axis of rotation to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, deformation, facing, and turning, with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object with symmetry about that axis manufacturing processes including, the fabrication of crankshafts, legs of tables, camshaft, bats, candlestick holders, bowls etc. It also works Decemberfor 9, metalwork, metal spinning, turning wood and in glass work 4 x axis Z axis December 9, 5 December 9, 6 The main function of a lathe is to remove metal from a piece of work to give it the required shape and size. This is accomplished by holding the work securely and rigidly on the machine and then turning it against a cutting tool which will remove metal from the work in the form of chips. December 9, 7 Explanation of standard components in a Lathe Bed: Usually made of cast iron. Provides a heavy rigid frame on which all the main components are mounted. Headstock: mounted in a fixed position on the inner ways, usually at the left end. Using a chuck, it rotates the work. Chuck: 3-jaw (self-centering) or 4-jaw (independent) to clamp part being machined. December 9, 8 Tailstock: Fits on the inner ways of the bed and can slide towards any position the headstock to fit the length of the work piece. An optional taper turning attachment would be mounted to it. Carriage: Moves on the outer ways. It is also used for mounting and moving most of the cutting tools. Cross Slide: Mounted on the traverse slide of the carriage, and uses a hand wheel to feed tools into the work piece. Post: To mount tool holders in which the cutting bits are clamped. Lead Screw: It is used for cutting the threads. December 9, 9 Various operations can be done in the Lathe: Turning: produce straight, conical, curved, or grooved work pieces, such as shafts, spindles, pins, handles, and various machine components. (Reduce the diameter of the workpiece). December 9, 10 Facing: To produce a flat surface at the end of the parts such as parts that are attached to other components, or face grooving to produce grooves for O-ring seals. (Reduce the length of the workpiece). December 9, 11 Knurling: To produce regularly shaped roughness on cylindrical surfaces, as in making knobs. December 9, 12 Threading: To produce external or internal threads in work pieces. December 9, 13 Drilling: To produce a hole this may follow by boring to improve its accuracy and surface finish. December 9, 14 COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Ex 5: B Demonstrate on Milling Machine December 9, 16 Milling is the process of machining using rotary cutters to remove material by advancing a cutter into a workpiece. This may be done by varying directions on several axes Milling machine is a machine tool that removes metal as the work is fed against a rotating multipoint cutter. The cutter rotates at a high speed and because of the multiple cutting edges (multi-points cutter) it removes metal at a very fast rate. December 9, 17 The machine can also hold one or more number of cutters at a time. This is superior to other machines as regards accuracy and better surface finish, and is designed for machining a variety of tool room work. December 9, 18 Milling Machine Operations: Plain milling: The plain milling is the operation of production of a plain, flat, horizontal surface parallel to the axis of rotation of a plain milling cutter. The operation also called slab milling. December 9, 19 Side milling: The side milling is the operation of production of a flat vertical surface on the side of a work piece by using side milling cutter. The depth of cut is adjusted by rotating the vertical feed screw of the table. December 9, 20 Angular milling: The angular milling is the operation of production of an angular surface on a work piece other than art right angles to the axis of the milling machine spindle. December 9, 21 End milling: The end milling is the operation of production of a flat surface which may be vertical, horizontal or at an angle in reference to the table surface. December 9, 22 Form milling: The form milling is the operation of production of irregular contours by using form cutter. December 9, 23 Face milling: is a machining process in which the milling cutting is placed perpendicular to the workpiece. The milling cutting is essentially positioned “face down” towards the top of the workpiece. When engaged, the top of the milling cutting grinds away at the top of the workpiece to remove some of its material December 9, 24 QUESTION: What are the main differences between a lathe and a milling machine?
