Q.P.Code 105013 Reg. No.:………………… First B.Sc Optometry Degree Examinations -September 2013 ENGLISH Time : 3 hrs Max marks : 80 Answer all questions COMPREHENSION (10) Read the passage carefully and answer the questions Rapid urbanisation has created a large number of problems, particularly in underdeveloped or developing countries. The most noticeable effect is the appearance of slums and overcrowding of cities resulting in unplanned growth of the place. Pollution is the direct outcome of urbanisation. The number of vehicles on roads is rapidly increasing so are the sources of water and noise pollution. Chemical wastes are contaminating the rivers and seas and poisoning drinking water and fish and the air is being polluted by various kinds of poisonous gases and fumes from industrial plants and automobile exhausts. Mahatma Gandhi quite rightly said that we need to make our villages self-sufficient and autonomous, this will prevent migration to cities and not put pressure on the infrastructure of the cities. Where does rapid urbanisation create problems? What is the most noticeable effect of urbanisation? What is poisoning drinking water and fish? Why did Mahatma Gandhi stress on making villages self-sufficient and autonomous? How is air being polluted? 5x2=10 GRAMMAR (30) 6.
